It’s sign-stealing time again

Special to the Post-Dispatch

Political Fix and the Post-Dispatch news room have been flooded with reports of campaign signs being stolen this weekend.

The callers were reporting “massive numbers,” as one put it, of Obama signs snatched from yards in Olivette and University City. (Obama’s signs cost $8 apiece.)

No doubt, there have been McCain signs stolen as well.

Sign stealing always seems to be a problem near election time, especially if a contest seems close. In fact, that’s often one of the indicators.

Just to get a sense of how active this thievery is this fall, this thread is to tally any reports of widespread sign-stealing, regardless of political party.

Obviously, if anyone has any direct knowledge of who’s responsible, please call your local law-enforcement agency.

those areas are very Democratic - therefore if anyone is stealing signs it has to be Democrats!

Well… I don’t have them.

But I hear they’re worth 8 bucks a piece.

I have video of Quaker like women with high hair stealing Obama signs.

Obama staffers are probably stealing them back and reselling them … used yard signs, only $8. What a bargain!

I think that sign-stealing has probably been a key aspect of political seasons since 1776. Who cares? Stealing is a crime only if you get caught.

All of my neighbors must be wealthy, judging by the huge numbers of Obama signs in their front yards.

Too bad you don’t know your neighbors well enough to say if they are rich or not. You should go talk to them. Turn off your PC, buy a six-pack of beer and go see if any of them will have one with you.

In the early 70’s in Madison County, then State Rep. Sam Vadalebene, from Edwardsville was running in a heated primary against former State’s Attorney and mob reformer Dick Mudge. The two had a debate at the Knights of Colubus Hall in Edwradsville and Sam was livid that people were stealing his signs. He didn’t accuse Dick’s supporters of doing it, but that was the unspoken mplication. Sam went on and on about it and then the moderator turned to Mudge who had his head down and hands in under the table. When the moderator called on Mudge a second time, he looked up and said, “Oh, sorry, I was just pulling splinters out of my fingers.” The place erupted. Sam won in spite of the missing signs and went on to become a legend in the Illinois Senate.

The yet even more desperate McCain camp strikes again…

Just another symptom of being republican. They’re so scared Sen. Obama is going to win they think if they steal his signs it will help McCain.

8 bucks! That’s like twice the value of a RAMS ticket.

political signs are enviromental pollution…i heard they weren’t printing anymore obama/biden signs because they know biden is going to drop off the ticket soon…

Your second statement above Im sure also could be switched above to reference your first. So somthing like this

… and I head that “willys” likes to make up untrue little rumors about republicans being scared that they would steal Obama yard signs.

I’d would like to thank you for advancing the debate backwards a few steps.

One of the oldest political tricks in the book is to cause your own signs to be stolen, then call the media about it.

Get over yourselves. Most political signs being stolen are due to nothing more than pranks by teenagers who couldn’t care less.

Those that are truly stolen by opposition supporters understand that the printing of signs is a cost of doing business.

Doesn’t make it right, but to have people flood a newsroom with phone calls sounds just a bit fishy!

My guess is that you can find the stolen signs at the local DNC headquarters with a new $8 price tag on them.

I thought in many municipalities it was against an ordinance to display campaign signs more than 10 days (?) out of an election. Maybe, just maybe, the Post Disgrace’s crack research staff, the ones who havent been laid off, could research that.

“It was against an ordinance”…Real men of genius.
How’s your 401K’s look today?

My 401K looks great today, Garrison … just for the record! Some of us learned about finance and financial trends and how to avoid losses when there are adjustments in the market.

Meanwhile, Gilleo vs. Ladue basically made all those ordinances null and void years ago. The only municipalities that still try to enforce them are merely trying to bully their citizens.

Put you signs out, I say. Proudly proclaim where you stand. I won’t disrespect anyone who feels differently than I do — unless they don’t understand why! (Garrison)

I don’t know of anyone stealing yard signs but I wish someone would steal my neighbor’s yard signs.

Every night I go walking I am greeted by a “larger than life” yard sign of Barack Obama plus a O’Bama sign where “‘” is a green cloverleaf.

I do have a Barr 08 bumpersticker I will sell.

Obama signs are being stolen in the Sunset Hills area as well. This IS a Republican tactic. I dont know if its kids of republicans cutting their teeth on dirty campaigns encouraged by their parents, or more strategery, but either way pretty sad for the group claiming “patriotism” while supressing free speech.

Jo - email me and I can give you a contact. At least a dozen signs have disappeared there.

I’ve also gotten reports of bogus voter registration postcards being sent out to people. The ones that tell you WHERE TO VOTE.

The snide comments of the republican posters really shows that they have no problem with these thefts.

This is an old tactic. Steal the opposition’s signs. Then, when they call and report the signs stolen it will appear that they stole their own signs in an attempt to frame your side for stealing their sign.

The only response is to steal your own signs and report it, making it look like the opposition stole your sign so that you would report it missing and thereby make yourself look guilty of stealing your own sign in an attempt to frame the other side for stealing your sign.

Or — it could be the same phenomenon I have seen in some of our local stores, the ones with the talking campaign dolls — there are plenty of Hillary and McCain but none of Obama.

I am going to assume that when Senator Obama becomes President, the signs will show up on E-Bay as “collector” items, probably being sold by Republicans who could not afford to keep up their house note.

I’m putting out a REWARD for all McCain/Palin signs: I’ll pay sign stealers TEN DOLLARS for every McCain sign they dig up, but only if there’s dirt on the stick from the green lawn it came from.

A bunch of Obama signs have been stolen in Clayton as well. It’s a sad day.

All the Obama signs were stolen in Grain Valley this past Saturday night. All the McCain one’s were still standing. And how dumb is it to steal sign’s of the people you support, like what someone posted earlier. Then it just looks like there are a lot of McCain supporters around you. Pretty stupid. Obama supports don’t have to sink to low tactics like fellow republicans. McCain supports are just acting like the guy in charge, when you can’t win fair, play dirty, lie, steal, cheat, whatever it takes. And they call themselves the “Country First” crowd.

Well someone nabbed one of our signs last night. I think people out here in O’fallon are getting scared the white house might turn blue this year.
