Joyce on “Truth Squad”: Not about prosecuting people

St. Louis Circuit Jennifer Joyce has been caught in a dust-up over her presence on a “Truth Squad” for Barack Obama. Jennifer Joyce

For the background, see Jo Mannies’ post below.

Now, here is a statement from Joyce:

As a citizen, I believe that elections should be about issues.  I also have enormous respect for our First Amendment and freedom of speech.  My sole purpose in participating in this initiative is about getting truthful information to the voters.  This has never been or never will be about prosecuting people.

Clearly there are those who are attempting to twist the purpose of this initiative for their own benefit. This attack is a great example of how the truth is distorted in campaigns and what we’re trying to stand up against.

Reporter: Obama ‘truth squad’ story got twisted

Gov Blunt used the official state website funded by taxpayer money to smear Sen Obama.

Frank Donatelli, deputy chairman of the Republican National Committee:

“In a telephone interview with the News-Leader, Donatelli admitted the Democratic prosecutors “haven’t specifically said” they would use their prosecutorial powers on Obama’s behalf.”"

The individuals only planned to campaign for Obama on their own time.

“By the way, a quick surf of the Internet found a McCain Truth Squad in New Hampshire, formed last January, that included several public officials with prosecutorial powers, including the state attorney general.”"

John Mills updated his story. The vultures can stop circling now. My guess is none of the right-wing blogs will bother to admit their over-reaction.

“They plan to respond immediately to any misleading advertisements and statements that might violate Missouri ethics laws.” That quote is from John Mills’ story, tho not a direct quote in the story, so must be a paraphrase. My comments: if that’s not a threat of prosecution, I dont know what is. Second, not sure whether Missouri Ethics Commission has authority over federal campaigns; if there’s a federal law, it probably preempts; if not federal law in point, still wonder whether they have authority over federal elections in this respect; might have to do with what ethics law says. And finally, dont think prosecutors can directly prosecute without first a finding by Ethics Commission that there’s been a violation. Conclusion, if that quote is paraphrase of what Joyce or McCullough said, it seems inappropriate on several levels and meant to intimidate. Now if they have authority to prosecute, then maybe it’s appropriate, but they’re not going to prosecute for nuance or over-simplification. And if they’re just there to tell the truth, reference to Ethics Law inappropriate. Cant have it both ways. I’d like to see them get off the committee. Key question: lies dont come any bolder than “thanks but no thanks”; so if they arent going to indict Sarah Palin, who and what do they intend to invite. Ladies, gentlemen, I want us to win, too, but you guys need to get back to your day jobs.

To Jennifer Joyce: The hell with your pathetic response. Now we are hearing a reporter say the story has been twisted. I don’t think so. Or maybe you didn’t think you would be posted all over You Tube. Your job is NOT to get truth to anyone unless it is a criminal trial. CAN YOU SAY “VIOLATION OF CIVIL RIGHTS OVER COLOR OF LAW”? Your cronies in other states are now doing what you are doing only to be called on the carpet. You are either a Nazi or a Stalinst…or both. The backlash is going to be huge. No American will ever stand for this unless they are socialists like you. Get the truth out? Who the hell appointed you gatekeeper? No one.

“How Obama really feels about free speech.’

and this means something?
It’s and editorial, somebody’s opinion.
No facts, just opinion
No credibility

Do something constructive with your time.
Use you energy for something other than making up lies and posting phony outrage

“It’s over”

So, Ms. Joyce, if you really only care about making sure the candidates aren’t libeling/slandering each other, why did you join a group called the “Barack Obama Truth Squad” instead of just the “Truth Squad”? If you really care about ethics, you should resign at once.

I’m sure Ms. Joyce has enormous respect for the 1st Amendment as does Mr. McCullough WHEN IT IS ONE OF THEIR OWN. Anyone else, that is another story.

What I see in her response is a rat scurrying around when the lights are turned on. Not a very pretty picture!

I suggest Ms. Joyce go back and read some of Alexander Solzhenitsyn’s work such as “One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich” or “The Gulag Archipeligo”. Then she could see the real effect of Stalinist policies.

Jennifer: if you were not caught in something underhanded, why did your governor issue a very public rebuff. “Nuclear,” one commentator called it. Hmmmm

STL and D. Walker are neck and neck racing for today’s I HEART Eric Mink.

STL has a slight lead.
