Maida Coleman running for mayor?

The Arch City Chronicle is keeping tabs on the rumor mill: They’ve got outgoing State Sen. Maida Coleman mulling a potential bid for the mayor’s office. Maida Coleman

Coleman’s name has been linked to other offices since she arrived in Jefferson City. Two years ago, her bid for State Auditor was thwarted by the disclosure that she had previously filed for bankruptcy.

As the Chronicle also mentions, Coleman considered running against Mike McMillan for License Collector.

McMillan, in his second year as License Collector, had been considered the front-runner to challenge Mayor Francis Slay, but after talking with the mayor at the Democratic Convention in Denver, has said he decided not to run.

That would appear to leave the door open for Coleman, who has already made clear her disdain for Slay. During a meeting of the city’s Democratic Committee last month, Coleman took exception with a contribution the committee gave to Slay.

“This insults half of the organization,” Coleman said at the meeting.

If she decided to run, Coleman could find strong support in a coalition of constituencies — unions, teachers, allies of former Fire Chief Sherman George — that have been irked by the mayor over his second term.

But it would be far tougher for Coleman to match Slay financially — he has more than $850,000 in the bank already, and with campaign contribution limits no longer a worry, should have no problem continuing to raise the green.

In a low turn out election which the March primary will be. 26k votes cast if that. The high of Obama will have passed win or lose, so the usual suspects will vote 12% on the low end 20% on the high. No heated races in the odd Wards on top of that. So in a race for 13k voters 850k does mean nothing. So can an opponent(Maida or anyone else) raise enough cash to reach 26k voters?
In a city with High crime,STD’s, increasing foreclousures, and a dwindling business community. I don’t think Slay can afford to throw mud on any opponent with out getting hit back( tow scandal, ball park village, chief George) and thats the past 12 mos.

Quick question - What has Maida done? Last I checked, NOTHING.

She won’t get my vote nor thousands of others.

Just accept the fact that an EXTREMELY LOUD yet tiny group of city and county residents don’t like Slay. They do not like him for their own hateful reasons. The rest of the city thinks he has done a good job and is tired of the same kooks screaming that the sky if falling day after day. People on the North side like him and people on the South side like him. We know you hate him and the fact that others like him just burns you up. We get it, you hate him. Get over yourselves, the rest of the city is tired of your games.

“People on the North side like him”

This alone discredits the rest of your argument…….

Maida who? Give me a break. Slay will certainly be getting one if Maida is the opponent.

Zaki Beruti’s a joke. He mentions Sherman George as a possible candidate and the next day George says no. Nice to know Beruti dreams up stuff and that he has radio and television stations in town who gives him publicity like they did last week. Beruti’s news conference WAS NOT NEWS.
