Missouri Right to Life’s leaders sent out an e-mail today lauding the Republican ticket of nominee John McCain and running mate Sarah Palin as “an authentic presidential ticket that reflects Missouri pro-life priorities… (and) gives Missouri ‘values voters’ something to cheer about.”

Said MRL President Pam Fichter in a statement:.. “John McCain understands that America must protect the unborn in law and never allow innocent life to be treated as property.

“His resolute knowledge that life begins at conception is not a statement of political expedience — it is a heartfelt belief of fact borne out in his legislative record.

“He also understands the importance of the contributions of pro-life voters. Pro-Lifers are the most dedicated workers in political campaigns, and McCain has chosen Sarah Palin, an outstanding running mate that pro-life activists can strongly support.”

Fichter went on to call Palin, the governor of Alaska, “one of the most exciting candidates to emerge in years.”

“…Palin is unapologetic and courageous in her defense of the unborn, and has been an example of strength and grace as a mother blessed with five children, including one with special needs. Sarah Palin is a member of Feminists for Life, an organization dedicated to the legacy of American suffragists like Susan B. Anthony and Elizabeth Cady Stanton, who spoke strongly against abortion while working for women’s right to vote….”

MRL also asserted that the Democratic ticket — nominee Barack Obama and running mate Joe Biden – “have solid records against the protection of innocent human life….”

How very generous of Pam Fichter to have deemed someone “Pro Life” enough for her standards! What about the dozens and dozens of Pro Life Missouri Legislators who were not deemed worthy enough for the Missouri Right to Life endorsement? Do you think that Pro Life Missourians are going to forget about that? We are tired of you using us for your little political power games. We want the President of Missouri Right to Life to value Pro Life over political party and you have demonstrated time after time that you clearly choose the latter every time. We need someone with the correct priorities and real leadership. You have become nothing more than a useful idiot. It is time for you to go.

What a joke! By Fichters and Plemmons standards, McCain should have been rated “Mixed”. MRL is all mixed up.

So Pam Fichter says:.. “John McCain understands that America must protect the unborn in law and never allow innocent life to be treated as property.” Isn’t this the same John McCain that has continually retirerated his support for direct government support for embryonic stem cell research during his time in the U.S. Senate and as a presidential candidate? Fichter makes this claim while MRL refuses to endorse numerous pro-life candidates during this 2008 election season for their alleged support for embryonic stem cell research during the past two legislative sessions. MRL’s barely concealed attempts to pander time and time again to the Republican party, coupled with their inept attempts to identify and endorse candidates as “pro-life”, are moving them to the outer bounds of relevancy in the pro-life debate in Missouri. (Another case in point: MRL continued to support Matt Blunt in 2004 even after he announced his opposition to the legislative cloning ban and his support for human cloning/embryonic stem cell research in Missouri.)

MRL has obviously not looked at the concerns expressed in 1998 by NRTL about McCain.

McCain says he does not support overturning Roe v. Wade.

In the last two terms of Congress, McCain has twice voted to expand federal funding for stem cell research.

McCain has voted for torture as the policy of the CIA and the United States.

McCain supports the expansion of the federal death penalty.

McCain is wrong for values voters and persons concerned with culture of life issues, especially Catholics.

Hello,

Just to clear up any confusion, I’d like to note that the post by “Robert Finn” below is by a different person than Bishop Robert Finn.

Thank you and God bless you,
