The Columbia Missourian did an interesting feature yesterday on Jay Nixon’s eldest son, 19-year-old MU student Jeremiah “Jer” Nixon, who writes and records rap music.

According to the Missourian, the music uses profanity, references violence and refers to women as “hos.” Jer Nixon is quoted as saying the music is “98 percent parody” and should not be taken seriously.

The young Nixon recorded with a group of friends who called themselves B.A.L.L.S in high school, and one track had 3,306 plays on the group’s MySpace page, according to the article.

The Missourian is produced by journalism students and as the article was being fact-checked, the article says the music began disappearing from the MySpace pages and YouTube.

Oren Shur, Nixon’s spokesman, is quoted as saying: “Jay loves his son, but certainly some of the lyrics in these rap songs show some poor judgment.”

Jer Nixon then added an apology for the “poor taste” of some of the lyrics.

Asked about the flap this morning, Zac Wright, a spokesman for the Democratic Party, said: “I think families are off-limits” in campaigns.

Well…at least he didn’t knock-up some trailer broad from Alaska with a father who hates America…

This kid is 19 years old and in college. He doesn’t necessarily need to be treated with kid gloves as Mr. Wright’s comment suggests, but his artistic expression (no matter hackneyed) is a reflection on him and not his father. The criticism belongs to him as his father wisely pointed out. If a few off-color lyrics are the extent of my child’s college indiscretions, I will certainly consider her upbringing to have been an unequivocal success. Jer, sweetie, that’s so 5 minutes ago. Now go do your homework.

There’s profanity in the movies we watch, Dick Cheney told a congressman to “go f**k himself” two years ago, we live in a culture of guns, a society at war, and there’s an illicit trade thriving on the smuggling of heroin, cigarettes, and women. “Jer” Nixon’s lyrics are a reflection of the world he lives in and he should be encouraged, if he has any talent, to continue to express himself.

I quote Public Enemy:

“Elvis was a hero to most
But he never meant sh*t to me
Straight up racist simple and plain
Motherf**k him and John Wayne.”

You can pass that on to whoever “they” be down-state.

This speaks to Jay Nixon’s ability as a parent and shows that he put his reckless political ambition ahead of teaching his children traditional Missouri values like respecting women and not referring to them in such vile terms.

This is going to go over great with the Assemblies of God crowd in Springfield and if Hulshof really wants to be governor he’ll make certain they and others who value women see the way Nixon has prepared his son to enter society.

Disgusting!!!

Take it easy there Shannon. Count to ten slowly. Now, can you please give me a good definition of “traditional Missouri values”? You sound like a time traveller from 1857. Lighten up.

Zac Wright must be from out-of-state. The Dems made families an issue the minute Roy Temple and Jean Carnahan attacked Melanie and Branch Blunt.

If Nixon raised his son to be a “gangsta rappa” then that an all the things his son says is relevant in this campaign.

If Wright has a problem with what’s coming next he should blame Temple and the Carnahan’s for making the political environment in Missouri so toxic and nasty.

Oh yeah, Shannon, Republicans really ‘value’ women. By ‘value’, do you mean take away reproductive rights, withhold equal pay, and put us back in the Stone Age with their policies? Because if so, you are spot on. Disgusting indeed.

Jay Nixon should buy his son a brand spanking new mixing table and embrace his son’s recognition of the great American tradition of freedom of speech. Let the boy pursue his own path in life.
