Former senator and presidential candidate Fred Thompson was in Missouri this week, stumping for Lt. Gov. Peter Kinder.Fred Thompson

The Tennessee Republican, who spent eight years on Capitol Hill and starred in television’s Law and Order, headlined a Kinder fundraiser on Wednesday at a Joplin restaurant, Granny Shaffer’s.

According to the Joplin Independent, Thompson told the crowd his visit was “payback” for Kinder’s early support of his White House bid.

Kinder is facing a challenge on Nov. 4 from Creve Coeur Democrat Sam Page, a state representative and physician.

At Wednesday’s event, the Independent reported that Kinder derided his opponent as a “St. Louis liberal” — a somewhat unexpected comment coming Kinder, who is well-known for being at ease among city Dems.

I’m still waiting to see all the posts from the guys that criticized Sen. Obama when Ashly Judd came to town.
