Anti-war groups to hold pre-debate rally in nearby park

Several anti-war groups — including Instead of War, Veterans for Peace, and CODEPINK — are planning to hold a rally at 5 p.m. Wednesday to “Demand Substance, Not Just the Same Song and Dance” during the vice presidential debate on Thursday at Washington University between Republican Sarah Palin and Democrat Joe Biden.

The groups opted not to gather in the protest area set aside at Wash U because, organizers said, few people or press would see them.

Instead, they are planning to gather at the west end of Northmoor Park situated at Big Bend and Forsyth.

“St. Louis Women (and others) for Obama/Biden will collect with our signs at the east end of Northmoor Park,” the groups said in a release. “We hope to march along with IOW and the vets and the pinks (attached is their flyer) toward the debate site.”

I hope the Code Pink ladies don’t cross the Innerbelt into Ladue, I think there is a municipal ordinance in Ladue that you have to wear green with pink.

So McCain says to Obama in the debate: “You just don’t say that out loud.” when Obama says we should take out AlQaeda leadership if they find them in Pakistan. And now we find out that McCain’s running mate Sarah Palin has said the same thing out loud, that bombing targets in Pakistan is OK. I guess that’s why we never heard her response to the debate- she wasn’t even watching it!

D. Walker — mlgb,

Let’s hope the Dear Leader’s Stormtruthers Chorus doesn’t appear.

Hey, BobZZzzz! I thought you’d pop in and we need to clear something up: I don’t mean to beat a dead horse here, but I’m not Dwalker, you have misquoted my previous posts, and gave me credit for other people’s ideas. With your political slant, you shouldn’t be so surprised to learn that there’s more than one person who can’t agree with you. Just get your facts straight. But if you keep it up, you’ll just end up getting the cyber cold-shoulder from me and our fun will come to an abrupt end.

Dear Leader’s Stormtruther — mlgb,

Were you aware the Dear Leader’s running mate had his own Bosnia sniper fire incident?

What a surprise that Bob Z. offers a link to fox news. You are both inane and predictable. What a combo. mlgb and D. Walker are not the same person unless he has multiple personality disorder and one of them doesn’t know how to spell and punctuate and is given to fits of RANDOM CAPITALIZATION.

Sorry if I come across as inane to you Penelope. That BobZ character has me stooping to his level. My apologies. I’d like to stick to the topic: I hope the turnout at this rally is huge. I hope the republican single-issue voters have a crisis of conscience in the poll booth and start to recognize the hipocracy of their “holier than thou” philosophy.

I meant Bob Z. is both inane and predictable. You are one of my faves, mlgb.

The headline of this article is misleading. The coalition of groups, Veterans for Peace, Instead of War and CODEPINK are not holding a Pro-Obama rally. All of our groups are focused on issues and not specific politicians. The rally is being held to highlight the lack of focus on real issues that face our communities, particurlarly in regards to the war. This is most likely a result of the St. Louis Women for Obama/Biden’s press release. We believe in the right to free speech, so we welcome those who wish to march with us. However, our message is definitely highlighting the lack of access to the debates of issues that are being ignored in the national spotlight. I would encourage everyone to check out our website: http://www.insteadofwar.org Both tickets, McCain/Palin and Obama/Biden, continue to support massive funding legislation to continue the war and their foreign policies do not bring our troops home.

Woah, I’m confident that Instead of War, Vets for Peace, and CODEPINK should not be listed as “Pro-Obama-Biden Groups.” Nor are they anti-O-B groups, though. Anti-War, Peace. and Justice advocates of every political stripe and color are welcome at this event.

This is a rally to attempt to shed light upon issues that will not be discussed at the debate. Like why our government can find money to pay for a needless war but not find money to help with low-income housing or healthcare, etc…

And, technically, I believe that Northmoor park is in U. City. and it’s south of Forsyth on Northmoor.

Cheers to you Colleen!! War is itself a crime against humanity. Peace Now!

Also, since the flyer is not listed, here is the information:

Rally at Northmoor Park in U City: 5-6 pm.
Real Issues March: 6-7 pm.

We Demand Substance,
Not Just the Same Song and Dance.

The Vice Presidential debate will be Thursday, October 2 at Washington University. Come join us as we highlight the lack of real solutions to people’s needs, and the denial of citizen access to the debate.

We will hold a short rally where we will hear the stories of six families who are facing real dilemmas as a result of United States government policies. We will hear from an Iraq veteran, a Gold Star father, an Iraq war refugee, a foreclosed homeowner, a person suffering from lack of healthcare and a local school board member.

Then join us for a Real Issues March to the Vice Presidential Debate, where we will request entrance for these families to have their voices heard. If denied entrance we will Walk Away from the debate to focus on real issues, and we encourage everyone to attend the healthcare conference, Bread and Roses, sponsored by Jobs with Justice, at 7 pm

To get to the rally, we suggest taking MetroLink to the Forsyth station in Clayton, and walking 3/4 mile east to Northmoor Park. See walking map. The march (Walk Away to Bread and Roses, 2.5 miles) will end near the Delmar MetroLink stop for easy access back to cars.

(Big Bend will be closed to both foot and vehicle traffic between Forest Park Pkwy and Forsyth. Driving and parking nearby will be difficult due to street closings. You might find parking in surrounding neighborhoods, for example, south of Wydown).

Colleen, have you checked with Metrolink to make sure it’s operating on that date, considering its proximity to the debate site. Some of my co-workers were wondering about that. That doesn’t really concern me since I drive my gasoline burning combustion engine from the deep suburbs into work.

I’d like to join you so I could protest the Obama platform of stunting our economic growth and reducing spending on future weapon systems. Does he want the Russians and the Chinese to advance ahead of us in military might? “Peace through strength” - Ronald Reagan.

I’d also like to protest against Obama’s version of Universal Health Care. Do we want the government obstructing the health care industry? The same government that imposed affirmative action on the mortgage industry and brought us the mess we have today. I’d really like to join you to protest Obama’s naive policies, but I have to work and take care of my family. Maybe that’s the problem with conservatives. We’re too busy trying to make a living, promote economic growth, and tend to our families. Maybe we should not work so hard and start spending valuable time protesting. Professional protestors might be the answer for conservatives.

Protest anti-war protest with anti-protest. China and Russia surpassing America in military strength? Hey buddy, where have you been? If either of them surpass us, it is because the money and resources have been wasted on Iraq. We have been weakened by the Bush regimes illogical and illegal prosectution of the war in Iraq. The Cold War was too expensive for the Soviet Union, and it collapsed. My opinion is that the “Hot Wars” like your republican heroes support are too expensive as well, and if anyone is responsible for a decline in American military dominance it is the republican club of Neo-Cons: Rove, Rumsfeld, Wolfowitz, Cheney, Bush, McCain, and all the morons that blindly put their support behind them without question.

There is a serious error in the title of this article. We need to be very clear this. Veterans For Peace does not endorse ANY candidate for office. We only adovcate for issues of peace and justice, especially for veterans and victims of war. Veterans For Peace is not pro- nor anti- Obama or McCain or any other candidate. At this rally and march, we, along with IOW and Code Pink, are seeking to bring important issues of peace and justice to the discourse in this election. If you wish to advocate for the issues we are presenting, please join us at the rally and walk with us in the march. You are welcome whether you intend to vote for McCain, Obama, McKinney, Barr, or any of the other fine find candidates running for President.

In fact, after the elections, no matter who wins, the work of peace and justice groups like IOW, Code Pink, Military Families Speak Out, Iraq Veterans Against the War, Vietnam Veterans Against the War, and others will go right on. Please join us. There will be much work to do!

Wage Peace!

The United States is ranked number one in military spending. The Pentagon’s budget is greater than the military spending of the next 14 countries on that list. Reagan dreamed up the missile defense system that they called “Star Wars”, and this helped bring an end to the Cold War. Reducing the burden on the taxpayers then by reducing spending on future weapons systems would not have been a bad move. Pursuing negotiations and diplomacy with our allies and adversaries to find peaceful solutions would have helped maintain a positive reputation around the world. Such approaches are always less expensive, and could have prevented some of these other economic woes we are currently experiencing. But regrettably the same republicans who took credit for “winning” the Cold War cannot take responsibility for negative effects of their later decisions on the American people and how we relate to the rest of the world.

I changed the headline, in response to several posts in which the authors declared that this gathering is not in support of the Democratic presidential ticket.

However, that’s how the event was billed by the group that sent me the press release.

But if the release was in error, I’m eager to correct the record.

“Pro-Obama-Biden groups” … “Instead of War, Veterans for Peace, and CODEPINK”

Enough said.

Jo, you are missing the real story here. Real war veterans, you know the ones who actually put their lives on the line everyday in Iraq are going to be holding their own rally. Yes, we don’t like to go and fight wars but we are willing to do that so all of you anti-war people can do what you do. You see in other countries like the very ones we are fighting in will make you dissapear never to be seen again if you protested the government.

So for all of you Code pink people and anti-freedom (war) protestors, feel free to thank all of the Vets for Freedom when you see us. We will be the All American looking men and women who are scared of what Sen. Obama will do to the military. After all this is the guy who said he will cut funding for future weapons systems development. Those are the same things that saved my life everyday while I was finding roadside bombs in Iraq.

So go vote for the guy who wants to put our military in harms way. Oh, and make sure you thank us when you are out there. However, I don’t expect you to do that. I am sure you will try to spit on us and call us baby killers too.

Jo, feel free to call me so you can put out the real story.

Of course they’ll only demonstrate where they can get MSM and TV coverage - they’re so completely ignorant they need a roadmap to find their backsides.
