The 2,800: Wash. U. prepares for media crush

Washington University has received more than 2,800 requests for media credentials to cover Thursday’s vice-presidential debate, according to the the school newspaper.

That’s twice as many as the school received in 2004, when it hosted the presidential debate.

Though not everyone who applied for credentials will necessarily show up, the number shows just how much interest the battle of running mates has generated — more so, perhaps, than their counterparts at the top of the ticket.

The Student Life newspaper also reports today that Chris Matthews’ cable staple “Hardball” will broadcast from campus, as will CBS’ “The Early Show.” Networks CNN and C-SPAN are expected to bring tour buses to the school.

While gas supplies are expected to be fine, you might want to stock up on hair spray.

Last I heard, the number was up to 3,100+. Will any of them note the fact that the St. Louis Athletic Complex at Washington University — site of tonight’s vice presidential debate — is located on the same ground where the ROTC buildings on the campus stood before they were burned to the ground as anti-Vietnam war sentiment reached a fever pitch in May 1970? Probably not, because that would lead to a connection to Barack Obama friend/colleague/domestic terrorist Bill Ayers who, at about the same time in history, was busy carrying out similarly detestable activities.
