Absentee ballots double in St. Louis, increase statewide

St. Louis Post-Dispatch

Missouri Secretary of State Robin Carnahan says that the number of absentee ballots has nearly doubled in the city since last presidential election, and is up substantially around Missouri.

The city had 14,801 absentee ballot requests, up from a total of 7,408 in 2004. Though there is no statewide tally of absentee ballot requests, unofficial reports show a 40 percent increase across the state, Carnahan reported today.

A large number of absentee ballots typically represent a high interest in the election, strong campaign organization, or both.

In Missouri — where a razor-thin margin in the polls separates Barack Obama and John McCain — could absentee ballots make the difference?

Why don’t you all just do early voting in your state? You know darned good and well these voters are going to be around on election day. That’s the point of republicans sending out all of those absentee ballots to folks who didn’t ask for them. They just don’t want to chance a longer line on election day. It’s a perverting of the law, so MO results won’t be valid. Why are you bitching about squirrel food when you let that go on? You know it was another chad type way of corrupting an election in their favor. But you’ll let them get by with it. Woncha?

WHY I AM VOTING FOR SEN. OBAMA SO AS TO FURTHER THE AGENDA OF DR. RON PAUL

SUMMARY

I love and respect Dr. Ron Paul and Ms. Carol Paul. They are wise, loving and courageous.

I am voting for Senator Obama because if I vote for my candidate of choice, Dr. Ron Paul, we might see a repeat of the last election and end up with a warmongering, inarticulate, Republican warmongering President who never really had to live in my shoes as a member of the struggling middle-class.

I believe that the American People are slowly becoming wise enough to see through the blatant manipulation of election results by the mainstream media that is owned and controlled by big business and by the two reigning political parties.

I am confident that by the next Presidential election in 2012 that the majority of American Citizens will know about:

1) the beliefs and record of Dr. Ron Paul;

2) the weakness of our present two party system; and

3) the existence and party platforms of other alternatives such as Green, Constitution and Libertarian parties. I am confident that the REVOLUTION Dr. Ron Paul started against the big business controlled media and two reigning political parties will continue to benefit our nation for the greater good.

MY RATIONALE

Socialist Universal Health Insurance

I say - BRING IT ON! Our present health care system benefits big business and illegal aliens, not the American citizen or the American health care providers. I have lived without health insurance and I know from personal experience that the present system degrades the health of American Citizens on a daily basis. Once all Americans have health care - without the huge glut of illegal aliens - we can consider other options as Dr. Paul suggests. I see it as a possible evolution from where we are now to where we and Dr. Paul wants us to be.

Experience

I like the idea of having an experienced lawyer as our President instead of a warmonger. I put more experiential value in the art of negotiation and the ability to maintain a “poker face” through negotiations than I ever would with Senator McCain’s more extensive experience with our historically dysfunctional Congressional system.

Organized Efficency Leading to Positive Results

Look at the Obama Campaign to see what organizational and operational efficency should look like. The Campaign has delegated responsibility which is being monitored with oversight.

During a crises or negotiation organized efficency with coexisting transparent and powerful oversight is more likely to lead to consensus, compromise and ultimately a resolution so the issue can be finalized and not sensationalized or drawn on forever as grist for a ineffecient political machine. Politically created grist only serves to steals from its’ nations people through the redundant and never-ending grinding of that politically created grist.

Release of Politically Motivated incarceration of wrongly-accused Domestic Political Prisoners

Senator Obama will release DEA Agents Ramos and Compean. I just wonder how many thousands of wrongly-accused Domestic Political Prisoners there really are. Will we ever know? Will they ever receive justice and be released? Will they receive the future psychological support, financial compensation and renewed respect they deserve?

The Bailout

Payout to banks without oversight - oops, they’ve done it again. Yes, I know Senator Obama supported it. The public has taken note of those who voted in support of this travesty and we will see the publics’ displeasure on the local level in THIS ELECTION - Nov. 2008. I predict incumbents will be out and independents, Libertarians, Democrats and Constitutional candidates will be in. Weakening and ultimately shaking the Republican party to its core is a good objective that will help advance the Campaign for Liberty agenda.

Our Beloved Soldiers and Veterans

I believe Senator Obama will end our national propensity of codependency in world affairs. This attitude has wounded our national reputation. This attitude has psychologically, physically and financially wounded our beloved soldiers and veterans.

I believe Senator Obama will work toward restoring our standing in the world as a wise and fair world power that is willing to come to the table with the devil himself to negotiate for a better world for all peoples and all nations.

Abortion

I am an infertile 54 year old woman who is well past menopause. I will most likely never bear children. However, it is still my body and I want to be able to make my own choices about whom and what enters, exits, controls or inhabits it. I also don’t like the idea of a fetus being aborted. So I will leave this decision up to each woman with input from their choice of outside resources including their God if so desired. Ultimately abortion is not a decision that should be controlled by the government. It is a deeply spiritual choice in my opinion. It is a decision to be made by ones’ heart. ones’ mind, and ultimately by ones’ soul.

Race Relations

No matter what whites, blacks or any other color person wants to say - Senator Obamas’ biology, biochemistry and ethnicity are a mix of diverse races. Time to realize by the year ______ the US primary race will be ________. The primary language will be ______ by ______. It’s time realize our country was founded with one of the sole purposes of allowing the very freedoms that have contributed to the US evolving into a nation of “mutts.”

It is only logical that with freedom of religion and freedom to marry across race and cultural lines that love would conquer all considerations - leading us to become a country of “mutts.” As someone who is half Hungarian and half Irish, I think the diversity strengthens us. At times I may long for the days when I could attend Bowie State University as a minority. At one time Bowie State University was primarily a black college so a white student could attend as a minority. But to give up that chance in favor of diversity I am ready to choose diversity.

Taxes and Finances

We have a better chance of evolving into the gold-based system and getting rid of the Federal Reserve with Obama than with McCain as President.

War

Colin Powell left the Bush Administration. He is crossing party lines and endorsing Obama. I trust that Colin Powell has had the best interests of the American People and the American Soldier in his heart at ALL TIMES. I t is time to let him lead us with his heart once again.

THE EVOLUTION OF MY CHOICE FOR PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATE 2008

In 2006 I was leaning toward supporting Fred Thompson because I saw him portray himself as a wise, dynamic, and courageous lawyer in a movie called, “Marie, A True Story.” In that movie, Fred Thompson played himself, as the attorney who defended Marie Ragghianti, the equally courageous woman who took on the corrupt and very dangerous Tennessee political upper echelon and won. My personal attorney, the late Fred Joseph was a friend of Fred Thompson and spoke highly of him to me on a number of occasions. But as Fred Thompson’s campaign developed I knew that he had changed. So I went on to search for another candidate.

I soon discovered Texas Congressman, Dr. Ron Paul and realized that he came closest to the wise, dynamic and courageous individual that I hoped would be elected to lead our country into the future. I changed my lifelong party affiliation from Democrat to Republican so I could vote for Dr. Paul in the primary election. Dr. Paul remains my choice for President in 2008, but the mainstream media and the Republican machine have used some of the dirtiest most unethical methods to block Dr. Paul’s candidacy.

CONCLUSION

I will begin to openly and aggressively campaign for Senator Barack Obama as of today and with the publication of this document·

I welcome the input and comments of everyone and I, as a human being with many flaws and as a citizen of the United States of America Ireserve my right to change my mind as a result of new information.

Sincerely,

Hey SorryMoSots,
It wasnt the Repubs who sent them out but the Dems. Not only did the dems send out absentee ballot requests but they fraudulently used the Election Board return address to further create chaos and confusion. They know the more chaos they create, the more lawsuits they can file objecting to the results when it doesn’t go their way. The same thing they did in 2000.

Oldtimer is right. The St. Louis City Democratic Central Committee sent out absentee ballot applications that were already filled out and which encouraged people to vote for a Democratic candidate. Instead of using their own return address on the envelope, they used that of the Board of Elections–an alleged but convenient error on the part of the printer. If you want to talk about perversion of the processs, please get the party right.

The same is true about the voters who are waiting in line to vote “absentee.” Unless huge numbers of people are planning to flee Missouri on election day, I would be willing to bet they are lying when they fill out their absentee applications. Since the majority of voters in St. Louis City are Democrats, it would appear that, once again, Democrats are, as you say, “corrupting an election in their favor.” But I guess you’ll let them get by with it, “Woncha?”

Delamer -
Many of my friends who are over 70 have chosen to fill in “absentee” ballots because they wanted shorter lines. Anyone can fill out an absentee ballot no questions asked, there is no need to lie. On top of that, many people are going to be poll workers, and they hav eno other alternative but to fill in an “absentee” ballot.

Sorry to rain on your parade with something as mundane as fact…

RHarnack–
I am not the least bit confused, but you are. The absentee ballot application requires the voter to indicate why he/she is applying, and here are the choices:
1. Absence from the City of St. Louis on the day of said of election
2. Incapacity or confinement due to illness or disability, including a person who is primarily responsible for the physical care of a person who is incapacitated or confined due to illness or disability
3. Religious belief or practice
4. Employment as an election authority, as a member of an election authority, or as a member of an election authority at a location other than my polling place.
5. Incarceration, provided all qualifications for voting are retained.

Sorry to confuse you with something as mundane as the LAW, but fraudulently voting absentee is a class one election offense. Note in the above stipulations that those who are incapacitated or working for an election authority (not a candidate) may vote absentee.

At least one radio station that I am aware of was encouraging voters to use the absentee process to vote early, and I have heard many people say that they are doing it to avoid long lines, but let’s be clear. Missouri does not have early voting, and whether they are caught or not, those voters who are lying on the application are, indeed, violating the law.

Delamer -
You are correct in what the form to request an absentee ballot says, however, if you had gone in to either the St Louis County Board of Elections (which my Mother-in-law and her brother did), or the the St Louis City Board of elections (which my wife did), you still could cast your vote.

Of course if you want to be a stickler, I guess you could compel all of the nursing homes to bring their people to the polls rather than casting an absentee ballot. I wonder how that would look of Fox/NBC/CBS/ABC self-righteous poll watchers accusing people in wheel chairs and with walkers of not being a valid voter?

I myself will be in line at 6AM on Tuesday, after taking my poll worker wife to the polls at 4:45 AM.

RHarnack, please read the absentee requirements. We do not require those who are incapacitated in nursing homes to be transported to the polls with their wheelchair and walkers. They may vote absentee. Your wife is working at the polls. She also had the right to vote absentee. Relax.

Election authorities do not grill each absentee applicant. They are allowed to fill out the form, truthfully or not. However, I can tell you that some folks who outright admitted that they did not meet the criteria and just wanted to vote early were asked to leave–at least in the city.

And don’t worry. I won’t be sleeping in on Election Day either. Like your wife, I’ll be working for an election authority, and after she has come home to you, many of us will still be working.

We are grateful to her for her service.

So, people are waiting in long absentee voting lines at the election board to avoid long lines on Tuesday. Possibly true, but likely not.

Yes, Missouri needs early voting. Another area where we are behind the rest of the country.

One more thought on this…

I am much more likely to believe that people are voting absentee because they have heard horror stories about people being removed from the voter roll. They may figure that the best way to avoid disenfranchisement is to find out about it now–while there is more time to fight it.
