Firefighters add to Slay’s union support
The union that represents city firefighters has become the latest to back Mayor Francis Slay’s third term.
Just weeks ago, union members were lined up outside City Hall, picketing Slay’s role in taking a pay-raise proposal off the table.
With a new pay package approved, the mayor on Thursday announced the endorsement of Firefighters Local 73. Despite the pay dispute, Local 73 has been generally supportive of Slay, backing his decision — privately, at least — to oust ex-Fire Chief Sherman George last year.
But all of these labor endorsements for the mayor before filing even begins are beginning to make next year’s contest feel more like a coronation than an election.
Are Slay’s early backers even curious who might sign-up to run against him? Doesn’t seem like it.
