Kinder renews special session call; gas prices drop again
When Kinder first called for a special session to add money to a utility assistance program that normally gets funded early in the legislative session, he was asked: “Why now?” Energy prices were actually higher during the legislative session when Democrats were pushing for more funding.
Kinder, who is facing Democrat state Rep. Sam Page in a tight race for the lieutenant governor seat, said the price of crude could change at anytime and might soon again be over $100 a barrel. The next day it dropped to below $70.
Not deterred, Kinder is at it again today in Springfield, pushing for his special session even as state officials say they might not need the money, because of an infusion of federal funds.
And what’s happening in Springfield today? The price of gas has dropped to below $2 a gallon, according to the AP:
SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (AP) — Gasoline prices in Missouri are well below the national average, with a few retailers selling fuel for less than $2 a gallon.
KTTS-FM in Springfield reported Monday that gasoline in Nixa was selling at one retailer for $1.98 per gallon. Springfield’s KYTV-TV reported fuel selling for $1.97 in Carthage, $1.97 in Nixa and $1.99 at a Cassville retailer.
Triple-A says Missouri gas prices have fallen from $3.41 to $2.33 in the past month. The auto club’s Fuel Gauge Report said the national average is $2.66, about $1 less than the average a month ago.
Oil prices traded below $63 a barrel Monday morning, despite OPEC’s sizable output cut last week. Instead investors are focusing on growing evidence of a severe global economic slowdown that would undermine demand for crude.
Democrats have called Kinder’s call for a special session a transparent political ploy. They have not commented on Kinder’s apparent ability to single-handedly contribute to lower gas prices.

What a stunt! He said nothing about this when session was in and Page brought this up. Kinder is lacking in leadership, all ambition no vision.
Omgosh, look at all the Libtards! Wow!!! There’s going to be major disappointments in a week. Cheers….
“major disappointments”?
What country/state/city are you living in? Like it or not, agree or not, this is a Democratic year. It’s going to be a pretty big sweep.
The governor’s race might as well be over, many say the same for the presidential race as well.
Statewide, Carnahan is a lock, odds are great for Zweifel. Page may lose, but the Dems will also pick up a handful of seats in the state legislature, and possibly get a filibuster proof majority in the US Senate.
I don’t see too much to be disappointed about there.
Peter Kinder has always been a strong advocate for Missouri’s senior citizens!
Mo Independent…if Kinder is such a strong advocate for seniors as you state, then why would he advocate cutting medicaid as he did???
I am a lifelong Republican and seldom stray from voting Republican, but this is one time I will. Kinder has done nothing for veterans but talk and now to play this little game that will do nothing but cost taxpayer dollars is a joke. If there is a need for money for this, it can be done in the first weeks of session like was done a couple of years ago.
Sorry Kinder, you have lost the support of my family and I.
