NYT: Danforth blames ‘perfect storm’ against McCain
In today’s New York Times, former Missouri U.S. Sen. John Danforth is one of a number of Republican leaders past and present from around the country who believe the campaign of GOP presidential candidate Sen. John McCain is sputtering hard.
The story delves into GOP fears that McCain may not be able to overcome what has been a shift in the polls recently for Democratic candidate Sen. Barack Obama. A variety of reasons, from organization to message misfires to overarching economic fears are blamed.
Danforth tells the NYT reporter McCain should essentially “go back to the basics.”
“I don’t think it’s enough to talk about earmarks incessantly,” Mr. Danforth said. “He’s made that point. You’ve got to get beyond that and talk about the very dramatic taxes and spending in the Obama program.”
Even that might not be enough, Mr. Danforth said. “This is a year where everything that could go in Obama’s favor is going in Obama’s favor,” he said. “Everything that could go against McCain is against him. It’s absolutely the worst kind of perfect storm.”
The story also quotes Republican figures in Wisconsin, Minnesota, Pennsylvania, Michigan and Colorado, among others. All those states are or have been considered key states this election for both candidates.
(McCain a couple weeks ago announced that his campaign was withdrawing from Michigan, a sign that its electoral votes may have squarely fallen into Obama’s column.)
And speaking of Danforth, I’m taking this opportunity to revisit some video interviews I conducted in August in advance of the Republican National Convention. Danforth is one of the Missouri Republicans quoted.

Finally someone who will admit that it’s a bunch of outside factors that are hurting John McCain and not his “sleazy, innuendo-filled, dishonorable campaign.” (Not my words.)
More ‘the election is over and Obama won, no sense even voting’ from the NYT.
Voter suppression is only Evil (in the eyes of the press) when it’s against the Democrats
Ah, jeez … not another link to a liberal-hit piece from the NY Times.
ADAM NAGOURNEY and ELISABETH BUMILLER, two of the Times’ better
known anti-McCain - Palin journalists. What — you didn’t want to lead
with the other noted tag-team of Frank Rich - Maureen Dowd?
“Disclosures … struggling … Again and again … concerned … adrift …
expressions of concern” — and that’s merely from the first three paragraphs.
It’s not merely that Nagourney and Bumiller shade their presentation of
facts to present an all-is-gloom whack at McCain, it’s that we’ve got yet
another example of the Post-Dispatch propagating low journalism and liberalism.

I’m amazed at the number of moderate and conservative friends, co-workers, and relatives who have told me they’re voting for Barack Obama. Why? Most of them say there’s at least a chance for a fresh start with Obama and a new approach. There’s a chance he’ll make things better. With McCain, most of these people are saying, we know we’ll get something similar to what we’ve had for the last eight years, and we can’t take more of that.
I’m voting for Obama. And when I hear people get hysterical about that fact, or call him names like “Muslim” or “socialist” or “terrorist supporter” it insults me and my judgment as a voter. That type of attack only makes me more likely to vote for Obama. I don’t want anyone questioning my patriotism or freedom to vote for whomever I want.
Mr. Foster:
I understand your point, but not your need to be loved. An election should not be a popularity contest, least of all for the voters. If you are voting for Obama because you think he’s ‘cool’ and in voting for him some of his ‘coolness’ will rub off on you, then you are voting for for Obama all the wrong reasons. If, on the other hand as you state, you are voting for him; “for a fresh start and a new approach.” fine. Then you should be able to take the heat for doing so.
I know, because me and my friends in the GOP have taken such heat, from Election Night 2000 right up to right now.
Now if you choose to vote for Obama, please do so, it is your right to vote as you wish.
But know this: I have had my fill of attacks, and even hate for having supported Bush and I plan under an Obama ‘win’ to question his right to the office, his history, his background and to declare him a failed President on Nov 5th and continue till I’m taken to GITMO, or some other ‘re-education camp.’ He and his supporters will get no quarter from me as they have shown none, to me or to George Bush these last eight years.
I will declare his cabinet appointments will all be jokes, unqualified and incompetent, his appointments to the courts as liberal hack lawyers out ot make law not review it, that all his treaties will destroy our sovereignty and end us as a free people, and that every domestic program is socialism.
8 years of bile from the left… I hope I only have 4 years to return it all.
Need more proof of NY Times’ bias?
“[W]hen Palin came out onto the Wachovia Center ice Saturday night — greeted by resounding (almost deafening) boos from the Flyers crowd — the two hockey players who had no choice but to appear with her in that photo op were turned into props in a political campaign.”
That’s from the first version; it has since been updated (link below w/video):

“…resounding (almost deafening) boos… hockey players in a photo op used
as props…?
btw, Philly fans will boo Santa Claus — it’s a part of their DNA. Hockey players (among the most gracious of all pro athletes) used as props…?

Adam Nagourney = Hendrik Hertzberg = Eric Mink
(in ideology, not talent - of course.)
Fortunately, the vast majority of Americans have never heard of any of these men.
Danforth sounds like me every Monday morning trying to figure out how the Rams botched another one. “If Linehan would only ” Look, McCain is losing because the Reagan Revolution is over and conservatism has failed this nation in every measurable way. Deal with it.
Nothing to do with his doddering around like a lost old man on stage during the debates? Nothing to do with his hour-by-hour mind changing on issues? Nothing to do with his comment about knowing very little about economic issues? Nothing to do with his angry, bitter demeanor? Nothing to do with his pandering by “suspension” of the campaign to convince House members (although he is a SENATE member) to vote to spend nearly a trillion dollars with one corner of his mouth, while with the other he brags about cutting spending and earmarks? Nothing to do with the unbelievable selection of an issue-ignorant side-kick? Nothing to do with completely incoherent non-answers by his issue-ignorant side-kick Palin? Nothing to do with obvious signs of confusion and out of touch with reality by he and his side-kick? Nothing to do with racist comments and bigotry running wild at their campaign events? Nothing to do with the candidate’s support of Bush and Cheney on many issues? Nothing to do with the fact that this candidate can’t even look the other candidate in the eye? Nothing to do with with fact that this candidate called his colleague and opponent “that one” in utter, racist contempt? Nothing to do with a sordid personal history whereby his entire career was obviously built on the backs of others? Nothing to do with the only time in history when both a presidential and vice-presidential candidates on the same tickets were charged with ethics violations? Well then, perhaps it just is this “perfect storm” far removed from any responsibility of the candidate himself. What was I thinking?
Tsquare,
WOW so much for hoping for a better future–your already planning your hate for the next 4 years. Sorry, your wasting so much of your life before you actually live it. Were you living in the country while Bill Clinton was president? Now lets talk about the hate that Clinton had to withstand. I mean come on, the Republicans atttacked Clinton every day and night. They spent over $20 million dollars of our money with the phoney Ken Starr investigation. Sounds to me that you suffering from short term memory loss.
