Talent, Brown warn of possible defense cuts under Obama
Former Sen. Jim Talent, R-Mo., and state Rep. Jason Brown, R-Platte City, headlined a conference call Wednesday aimed at bolstering GOP assertions that Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama might dangerously slash defense spending.
In the call, set up by Republican John McCain’s campaign, Talent and Brown echoed some of the concerns raised earlier by Gov. Matt Blunt, in response to recent published statements by U.S. Rep. Barney Frank, D-Mass. Frank was quoted as saying that he’d like to see defense spending reduced by 25 percent, and linked that to the withdrawal from Iraq.
Talent, who used to be on the Senate Armed Services Committee, contended that military cuts of such magnitude would hurt the nation and the St. Louis area. In the latter’s case, he said that the region could face job cuts if defense spending is reduced.
Missouri, said Talent, is “a defense manufacturing state..a defense dependent state.”
Talent called on Obama to disavow Frank’s remarks.
Brown went much further, asserting that Obama likely shares Frank’s views, unless Obama makes clear otherwise.
”The liberal elite has always seen the military as something not to be proud of,” Brown said. “The liberally elite…don’t want us to be successful militarily overseas.”

Talent, Blunt, and Brown are fools. They all know that Barney Frank is not a foreign policy advisor to Obama and they are just grasping for anything that might get a few votes back now that it looks like a major loss is in the cards for the GOP. The following link provides a list of Obama’s foreign policy advisors:
http://www.connectusfund.org/obama/about
On the other hand, maybe Frank is on to something. I don’t know off the top of my head what percentage of the Pentagon’s budget is being spent on an unproven missile defense system being deployed in parts of eastern Europe or on the expansion of NATO in the same region that has us on the brink of a second Cold War, or how much they spend on building and buying “dirty” bombs with depeted uranium tips, or how much is being it costs to outsource to mercenary forces like Blackwater, or how much it costs to operate and maintain a prison where habeus corpus doesn’t exist, or how much they are spending on their efforts to dominate the realm of outer space, or whatever else nobody likes to admit to or talk about.
Perhaps putting an end to policies and programs that antagonize other nations and create more enemies is a step in the right direction.
Sorry - that link was incorrect. Try this:

A link to McCain’s foreign policy advisors is also provided on the page.
I really don’t know Blunt that wel or Brown, but I know Jim Talent very well and one thing I’ve never heard anyone call him was “fool”. Jim served in the House with Barney and I think I will take his opinon over yours.
And another thing that our illustrious representatives Talent, Blunt and Brown - “the Three Rebubbacan Stooges” - should know: In the past eight years, defense spending under Bush has risen 40% to a record level of 542.5 billion dollars. This is not including the costs of Iraq and Afghanistan which bring the total up to 612.5 billion. This equals roughly 20 cents for every dollar spent by the federal government,(pre-Wall Street Bailout).

I like the way the Post uses the small type to present the GOP point of view.

Small type for views from people with small minds.
Very appropriate
Obama plans to spend trillions…how does he plan to do this without raising taxes? Anyone know?
Adam-
Says who???? You can’t quote someone besides Senator Obama when it comes to how much who-ever says he will spend and then ask how he’s going to do it without raising taxes. Listen to the man. You will be most pleasantly surprised by what you hear…from HIM. Note to Talent: You are no longer on the Armed Services Committee, and no longer in Congress, for a reason. Go quietly into the good night.
Penelope: Everyone who isn’t wrapped around Obama’s finger knows he is the most liberal person in Congress. Don’t be naive. I would just like to know more details of his plans to help the economy. He says he won’t raises taxes–I doubt that. I am just curious, because you say that I should ask him, well I have sent several emails to his campaign. Still not a single response! Maybe he is just full of words, we need solutions.
Only been asked about a thousand different ways and Senator Obama always harkens back to his primary platform statement on taxation. Cuts for people making $250,000 a year or less. Adam, unless I am mistaken by your child-like prose and willful ignorance of Obama’s stance on taxes - even though I have heard it (and so have you) about a million times - you are not the sort of person that is bringing down a salary over 250K. You are just looking for a reason to vote against your own ecomonic interests…again. His platform is for and about the middle class. They buy more stuff. A couple of Mercedes and a $4 million house in the Hamptons (and vacations [tourism dollars spent] out of the country) are just not enough to turn this ship around. We need lots of middle class families buying a variety of houses, automobiles, boats, tractors, bikes and regular consumer goods in order to get this economy firing on all cylinders.
Mlgb,
Speakie zee English–Jeanie Buehler (sometimes they called her Shawna)
when Rep. Brown says “liberal elite” that’s his code word for uppity black man.
To jjk and BobZZzzz-
I really do appreaciate the way you both choose to avoid the discussion on defense spending by attacking me personally. I knew exactly what you would say. You have learned much, grasshoppers, from thy master. You lose the debate when you shoot yourself in the foot by not addressing the issue.
“No nation ever had an army large enough to guarantee it against attack in time of peace or insure it victory in time of war.” -Calvin Coolidge (R)
As a veteran of the U. S. Navy Submarine service, and of the first Gulf War, I respectfully disagree with the assertion that the “liberally elite” (which I guess is the same as the “liberal elite”) see the military as “something not to be proud of.” I am a liberal and very proud of our military. The difference is, when I think of “the military”, I think of the actual men and women on the ground doing the real work, and Republicans tend to be more concerned with “military spending”, i.e., the defense contractors and “Haliburtons” of the world (there is a lot of money in the destroying and rebuilding of a foreign country). I am not proud of the way in which those types have defrauded America and made the actual military men and women less safe. I guess at this late stage, any charge, no matter how unfounded, is deemed acceptable.
yeah, and they’re Communists! …and they’re ungodly…and, they’re…Liberals! Gee, great substance in the last week before the election. Two GOP lightweights and one huge loser say bad thinmgs aboout the one person who has been responsible and forthright throughout this campaign, Obama.
Stop the GOP lies!

I met Representative Brown during the past legislative session in Jefferson City. He seems like a great person. I was caught off guard by his need to comment on a statement by Rep. Frank. The fact that Rep. Frank has very little control over Defense matters as a representative is the first red flag. I seem to recall that Rep. Brown is a veteran, but all the same, his realm of leadership is here in MO. I may need to learn more about the context of his comment. Rep. Frank is the chair of a committee that focuses more on lending institutions. His comments about Defense spending should be taken as only that, a comment.
“…right wing extremest hate mongers … you(‘re) so pathetic … “real hypocrites, real bigots and real racists” … oh slammers of all things Obama … you extreme right loonies …”
D. Walker, is that you… spoofing as — STL?

Here’s how a certain well-known politician would respond:
It’s true, I do know Airball
We have met at small social gatherings
He’s somebody who lives in my neighborhood
Our kids go to the same school
He happens to be a well-respected xxxxxxxx
He is not an advisor to my campaign
He’s not the man I thought I knew
Uh, er, ah, thank you all for coming.

Where’s your sense of whimsy … or only when bashing Gov Palin’s baby?
Where’s your outrage at “O” sitting through a jew-bashing event?
Where’s your sense of tranquility … haven’t you already voted for “Him”?
Are you doing the presumptuous “I’m here for Obama” thing again?
Here’s how

Just watch… McCain is gonna carry MO thanks to Blunt. This is a good thing to hit him on because it clearly is at odds with what most MO’ans think. It’s no coincidence that McCain is still up in MO while losing most other Midwest states. The gov sets the tone for the campaign and it’s showing.
