El-Amin

It has been a difficult spell as of late for former state representative Yaphett El-Amin.

On Oct. 8, the St. Louis Democrat was slapped with a $10,000 fine by the state Ethics Commission for irregularities on her campaign forms. El-Amin, who served four years in the State House, ran unsuccessfully for the State Senate in 2006.

Today, El-Amin’s father, Eddie Hasan, was sentenced to a year and a day in federal prison for tax fraud. Hasan, founder of the minority-contracting group MoKan, admitted filing a false return involving money from a St. Louis Public Schools contract.

Hasan, 61, is — at least until recently — also publisher of the St. Louis Argus.

There are no indications that Yaphett’s husband, Talibdin, who took over his wife’s State House seat when she ran for State Senate, is involved in the Ethics complaint, or Hasan’s conviction.

If you don’t want the time, don’t do the crime!
Have fun in the pen, Eddie!

Both TD and Yaphett have encountered their share of struggles over the course of the last year. Whether it be the loss of TD’s brother Tim or the most recent demise of Yaphett’s father, the adorned Eddie Hasan. While many have put the El-Amin’s on pedestals in the black community and amongst the political elite, the truth is that they too are human. No matter what God we serve, it is unfortunate that their family will have to bear the blemish that Mr. Hasan’s selfishness has caused.

In many ways, Mr. Hasan has been revered as a black messiah in St. Louis City. If you’re not familiar with him, his mannerism can be mistakenly likened with that of a dictator. The sad truth is that no one is free from accountability, not even Eddie, like so many politicla figures in St. Louis that take a stance of justice for our community when the media is around, while in the background they cunningly sell out for greed’s sake. I pray for his soul and that of his family (TD & Yaphett) and hope that they will learn humility during this tough time. Keep your head up Yaphett. - S

I have one simple question! WHO REALLY CARES? She is no longer a State Rep., must a “regular” citizen. Why are you wasting time on this issue?
