Bargain bin: Wal-Mart gives to Nixon — two days after election

Political donors will often hedge their bets by giving to both candidates in a competitive race.

But, in this month’s contest for Missouri governor, Wal-Mart found a way to make sure it was backing the winner: Wait until the polls close.

Campaign reports for Gov. elect Jay Nixon show that the retail giant gave the Democrat’s campaign $10,000 on Nov. 6 — two days after the election.

Though based in Bentonville, Ark., Wal-Mart has strong ties to Missouri — founder Sam Walton went to high school in Columbia, Mo.

However, that bit of history may not hold much sway for members of organized labor — early and active supporters of Nixon — who for years have battled Wal-Mart’s attempts to keep unions out of their stores.

Not to mention WalMart’s first Supercenter was in the exurb of Washington and Bentonville’s a stone’s throw away from the Missouri border. In fact, owing to Benton County’s dry status, the closest Wal-Mart to the hone office that has liquor sales is the store right across the border in Jane!

As for the $10,000, looks more like a effort to establish two minutes of mutual back-scratching.

Garrison, have you filed a complaint with the National Labor Relations Board about Wal-Mart or are your accusations just union propaganda? The three Wal-Mart workers I know well say they’ve experienced no such intimidation. One recently finished college and moved from part time to full time work and is very satisfied without union manipulation.

There are dozens of state and federal laws already that protect unions and workers alike. Yet the unions want to strip workers of their right to secret ballot. Can you explain how your position demonstrates concern for workers rights instead of the obvious concern for union power. From many of your previous comments I thought you were a “pro choice” person.

Costco, that shining beacon of hope for the union cheerleaders, that employees a few thousand people at wages similiar to those that work at Wally World.

I personally know several folks that work at Wal Mart. One makes over 200 gs, a couple are pushing 6 figures. I also know an older lady that is nearing retirement and has over 1 million bucks in WMT stock.

How many millionaires has your union created Garrison?

Ammo and firearms are two American manufacturing sectors that are surviving. Leave it to Garrison to want to destroy them.
