Since the debacle in St. Louis eight years ago, U.S. Rep. Lacy Clay has kept close tabs on city elections, making sure his constituents don’t have any obstacles getting to the polls.

This year, he’ll take his efforts a step further — by stepping on the gas.

The Democrat, an early Barack Obama supporter, will be personally driving a “get out the vote van” that will chauffeur voters to the polls. The shuttle will leave from Clay’s headquarters on Euclid Avenue in the Central West End.

Being in the driver’s seat will also give Clay an early and close look at any polling stations that could be experiencing problems.

I’m sure he will be out in the western part of the district.
