Schupp

Lost amid all the excitement of the presidential and statewide election results were some compelling races farther down the ballot in Missouri.

To wit: Democrat Jill Schupp bested Republican Frank Plescia, a former Monsanto lobbyist, to win the 82nd State House District seat, the post Sam Page gave up to run for lieutenant governor.

Schupp, former president of the Ladue School Board, was elected last year to the Creve Coeur city council. Her husband is ad man Mark Schupp, whose downtown firm has generated attention with “viral” promotions for the Cardinals and Blues.

No such stunts were employed in Jill’s State House race, but the waning days did see Plescia’s oppponent in the Republican primary, ex-Frontenac alderman Terry Frank, endorse Schupp over his GOP rival.

What a true grassroots campaign. Jill is a candidate who worked much harder than her opponent and really made the effort to meet her constituents because she really does care. Jill is a dynamic leader and will make a positive impact in Jeff City. Congrats and good luck Jill!

I don’t see why anyone thinks this is such a surprise? I live in this district and there are very few Republicans. She is a nice gal and I really like her, I just wish I could vote for her.

Just curious jjk, if you like Mrs. Schupp is a “nice gal” and you “really like her” what kept you from voting for her?

I’ve met Mrs. Schupp and she’s a great lady and will be a wonderful State Rep.

Not to say I told you so . . . here is my comment from 7 months ago:

“As a moderate GOP, who recently lived in this district, I suppose a Republican could win, but neither of these candidates can or will. One of the GOP candidates is a big business lobbyist (he will obviously support all of Monsanto’s genetically-engineered product initiatives and legislation) with absolutely no local political experience and the other ran for statewide office under the Reform party banner. This is the best the team in Jeff City could come up with? Come on team.

Regardless, Jill Schupp is as good as you will find. She is smart, passionate, an extremely hard worker, organized to a fault and highly moral and ethical. While I do not agree with her on every issue, I know that she will do what is best for the district and the state. She is a deeply caring person and will improve the entire Mo House. Obviously, I am a big fan of hers because I have seen her in action. Keep an eye on this young lady. She is good and she is going places.”

She is on the wrong side of the death issue. Supporting abortion is an automatic disqualifier for me. I do, however, agree with the statement’s that she is very nice, passionate, etc. “Choice” is one of those words that has been corrupted in our vernacular. There are also bad choices and abortion is one of them.

I voted against her. Her husband’s claim that he created Spuds Mackenize is BS. I knew the brand manager at the time, went to school with one of the 3 Bud girls. Besides, did we really need someone with marketing smokescreens in Jeff City? She’s in the minority party, will get little if anything done for us.

Spuds McKenzie was created by Mitch Meyers.

So, let me see if I understand this correctly, Scott Simon. You didn’t vote for a candidate because a blog says her husband created Spuds. Is that how you make all of your voting decisions? Interesting.

I did some checking with people who know the situation. Spuds was not created by the brand manager you referenced, Mitch Myers. Spuds was created by an art director at DDB-Needham in Chicago. It was an idea for a poster. Mitch did recognize the poster/concept as a good idea and pushed it through the A-B system. She certainly did not create it, but I supposed she should be credited for “discovering” it. Jill Schupp’s husband, Mark, took Mitch’s job as Brand Manager back in the 80’s.

If you go back and read the blog it says that Mark Schupp HELPED create the persona of Spuds. Which he did, in conjunction with key people at F-H. It doesn’t say he created the actual character. He HELPED create the persona. I do understand how you could be confused by this. He, like his wife, has high ethics and morals. He heads one of the most creative and successful agencies in town, Schupp Company. I don’t think he needs to lie about his accomplishments. He has plenty. I would suggest that you call him to get more info. From what I understand, he is a good guy and would likely be happy to talk with you about Spuds or any of his campaigns he has helped create.

I assume you went to school with Sandy M.? So, you’re a Parkway grad? Figures. Oh yeah, they were called Spudettes, not Bud Girls. But, you knew that.
