Gov.-elect Jay Nixon

The polls in the Missouri governor’s race showed Democrat Jay Nixon with a big lead heading into Tuesday’s vote, but I’m not sure anybody saw the race ending with a margin of 18 percent, almost 19 percent.

According to the unofficial final tally on the Secretary of State’s site, Nixon defeated Republican Kenny Hulshof 58.4 percent to 39.5 percent. In actual votes, it’s a margin of more than 500,000 votes of the 2.8 million cast in the gubernatorial race.

Nixon won several normally reliable Republican counties, including Greene County in southwest Missouri. In fact, Nixon won Greene by double-digits, 54 percent to 43 percent. Traditionally, Democrats believed that if they lost Greene County but won at least 40 percent of the vote, they would be in good shape statewide. Nixon blew that out of the water in what surely is one of the most lopsided governor’s races in state history.

The performance by those who ran Hulshof’s campaing in the county was just awful. 32%! It was almost political malpractice. Passinise did better than that. We have too many consultant types in the party who are just looking to make a buck. Where did all the money go? There were numerous house races which could have been more competitive had the top of the ticket paid some attention. Look at the new candidates and how they outperformed the governor Jotte would have won his race…maybe Brown also had the campaign not blown off STL. Carr ran 20 points plus higher than the top of the ticket in his race. Diehl increased his district margins over 2 years ago as did Plescia. While Stl Co probably cannot be won by R outright… it can certainly be won in areas and the losses mitigated if those running the party would at least pay some attention to it. If not addressed and we continue to only get 32-40 percent out of the county we will never again win a statewide race.
