President Bush pardons a turkey at the White House

Don’t expect any posts today, but that doesn’t mean there is not a lot to talk about.

It’s been a busy political year. Change is afoot in Washington and Jefferson City. At City Hall, the mayor is gearing up for another term. In Springfield, the governor has taken a break from his own troubles to vet potential appointments to the U.S. Senate.

On this Thanksgiving, what political event in 2008 are you most grateful for? Who’s your biggest political turkey?

Let us know below — it’s better than arguing about it at the dinner table.

Don’t make this so easy. The biggest turkey was easily the media, including the Post-Dispatch, and especially Deb Peterson for printing a completely false allegation about Gov. Palin. The media was truly disgraceful in their lack of coverage about PE Obama. I hope the country doesn’t end up with salmonealla poisoning.

Biggest turkeys? Those progressive dunderheads over on the P-D editorial board, of course.

Imagine the torment they’ll have writing about the massacre in Mumbai — or as they’ll pronounce it, The Mumbai Massacre.

“Was there an oppressive Indian FISA law … or a Patriot Act … an Indian Guantanamo?
How do we spin this so we don’t inadvertently make Bush look good for similar?
Was it cultural imperialism … free-market capitalism … the downtrodden reacting to years of British colonization … something about the unfairness of call centers?”

Can you just imagine the angst that P.J. O’Horrigan is experiencing now over his next editorial … while he stuffs another donut into his Turkey.

… because it’s the only game in town.

Whadyamean they keep reading? Even though it is the only game in town, fewer are playing. SLPD circulation is now the lowest it has been in my lifetime (and that’s a long time).

We read this blog, because of the diversity of points of view - and the price is right.

The problem with a newspaper monopoly isn’t with its editorial page - too few give a damn what they say. The problem is story selection. It isn’t so much the slant given to a particular story, it’s the thousands of worthy stories (both left and right) that management refuses to print. At least the internet makes it harder for the corporate media to conceal news like they were accustomed to doing for so many years.

The whine cellar is full of my picks for political turkeys. Proof positive that sour grapes make terrible w(h)ine. I am thankful that we have the P-D and thankful for the wisdom of its editors. Happy Thanksgiving!

Oracle nailed it. Its what is censored that is important.

I have two:
1. Proposition B was passed overwhelmingly because no one knew the SEIU paid for it and slipped in a provision that a 10% minority vote will drag the other 90% of home health workers into the union (The Post endorsed the sham).

2. The lawsuits in Capital City over Amendment 2 (cloning Constitutionally protected) and whether taxpayers are on the hook to pay for the “science”. Add that there is no analysis of the total failure of cloned embryo research to cure Michael Fox or anyone else, only tremendous political strife left in the wake of the $31 billion campaign.

BobZ - I have yet to see an editorial explaining how I thought everyone loved American now that H has been elected - so why were the Muslim terrorists looking for Americans to kill? Wow - I am really confused and what about the poor people in the Jewish Center - can’t Obama fix that too?

I’m thankful that I don’t live in the city of St. Louis, with it’s crime ranking in the top 10 in the country.

I agree that the slanted media was the biggest turkey of all.

Oh and Centrist, Obama hasn’t been sworn in yet…so the rest of the world still hates us. On January 20th, the rest of the world will love us and there will be no more hate towards America. Peace will reign throughout the world and our enemies will love us.

The absolutely biggest turkey is the PD’s lack of coverage of potentially one of the biggest Constitutional issues of the history of the country. We have a President Elect who has not confirmed his natural born status. We have no clarification on who is supposed to enforce that job requirement. This is not about throwing Obama out on a technicality. IT IS about playing by the rules set by our fore-fathers and not applying affirmative action to let him into the office anyway.

Jo Mannies, Jake Wagman and company should be disgraced at their lack of journalistic integrity. We know you all are registered Democrats, but you could at least cover the story like you are paid to do. On Monday, Obama must respond to the US Supreme Court. Why are you not covering this?

Many many times, I have said that if it all turns out that Obama is truly qualified, then I won’t have any problem with him assuming the office. I’ve been called by many names by many supposedly tolerant people on this site for standing up for an issue that every American should care about.

Cover the story… If you don’t, you all are the biggest, laziest turkeys of them all.

Too bad the skinny guy in bed sheets wasn’t available to test your non-violence gibberish in Mumbai, eh?

Re: “Jo Mannies, Jake Wagman and company . . . We know you all are registered Democrats”

There are no “registered Democrats” in MO because MO doesn’t register people by party.

Now, certainly political reporters bring political biases to their reporting, and they probably wouldn’t be any good at political reporting if they didn’t have enough interest in the field to have come to some conclusions on what they liked. Since a high percentage of J-School grads are liberal and prefer Democrats, the odds are with you if you guess that a particular reporter is a Democrat. Nevertheless, a few observations:

Jo has done a damned good job concealing her biases, because Republicans on this blog accuse her of being a Democrat and Democrats accuse her of being a Republican. She’s pretty tough on everybody.

When Tony Messenger wrote for SNL (the Springfield paper, not the late night TV show), he confessed to having libertarian sympathies, but those leanings haven’t surfaced since he joined the Post.

Jake covers city politics, which has a 3-party system, but he hasn’t disclosed which party he favors: the old white Democrats, the young white Democrats or the black Democrats. (There are also two semi-active “third parties” there, the Greens and the Republicans.)

Biggest Turkey = PD coverage. As soon as they actually realize that there is more than just whining going on, people will start to read the paper again. I will give credit to the Post-Democrat for one positive advance in my life though: now that I know that I can’t get straight news from the paper, I do talk to my neighbor more often now. If I want news. For granted, they are missing half of their teeth, and the other half are on a strip of plumber’s chain around their neck, along with a little name plate with their name and phone number stamped on it from the little pet collar tag maker at WalMart. But at least if I want slanted news, I know I can get it there for free, and they might even buy me a beer. Check it out Jo and Deb - I’m hard on everyone too :) At least I’m honest…. I hope that the coverage becomes a bit more informative on the complete issues. I mean, I’m already getting tired of talking to the neighbor ;)

BobZ - you know better than that… we don’t just keep on reading. We stopped that a long time ago. We just scope out the headline, look at any picture that might be there, and start typing whatever we heard from our neighbor on the issue. No need to bother reading anymore, you know…
