Missouri a squeaker — McCain, for now, may have an edge
+St. Louis County election officials finally released their tally at 1 a.m. Wednesday. Then they issued a new total at 1:32 a.m.
Democrat Barack Obama – 330,157
Republican John McCain – 219,787
Obama’s 110,370 margin is a record-setting lead for a Democrat in the county, the state’s largest bloc of votes.
But it’s unclear if that is enough for Obama to squeak out a victory, thus preserving Missouri’s status as the best bellwether in the country.
A quick addition here of the county’s final, with the existing 1 a.m. statewide totals from elsewhere, initially appeared to give McCain a statewide lead of about 400 votes.
BUT, after the county’s updated tally at 1:32 p.m., it initially appeared that Obama could be up statewide by about 1,500 votes.
None of those totals include any of the rumored 4,000 provisional ballots in the city of St. Louis and St. Louis County that likely would be pro-Obama.
BUT, at 2 a.m., the state had revised its tally again, to include additional votes from Christian County.
The result: McCain had an edge of about 4,800 votes.
State GOP executive director Jared Craighead said he expected McCain’s victory to stand. He called it “a testament to the voters of Missouri.”
Expect a long battle over all those provisional ballots, especially if there are thousands more in Kansas City.
Independent Ralph Nader could once again be the scapegoat. He got 17,469 Missouri votes.

Why does it take seven hours to get reports from a relatively small county like Christian County?
Yes, count those provisional ballots. Lets hope there are thousands. I don’t want MO to vote against the Pres. winner for the second time in 100 years as soon a black guy gets up there. Can we ditch that honorary star on the Confederate flag already? But if we are going to hate Latinos so much (English only, really?), why not vote against the black guy, too?
Regarding the Presidential race, there really isn’t a need to kill ourselves to see who truly won. It won’t make a difference and would be a waste of money. True, it is kind of a state pride issue, but it’s not that big of a deal.
Tom F — This is America and we speak English. That was a no brainer amendment.
It’s not that we don’t like Latinos. We have been speaking English in this country since we kicked the native Americans off the land. If I was to move to France, I would expect to have to learn French. If I moved to Japan, I would expect to have to learn Japanese. When you move to America, expect to learn the common language, or go back to the country of your origin. When the Mexicans/Canadians kick all of us English speakers off the land, then they can set the common language. Until then, have the respect for the people who won the battle first (no matter how unfair it may have been, and it was). Flame wars in 3….2….1…
Tom F. - you should be ashamed of yourself and your racist thoughts. If all you see is a man’s skin color, you need some multi-cultural sensitivity awareness help.
Tom F-
Keep it classy with assumptions about racism. There is no way it could simply be ideological/policy differences…
There are plenty of non-racist reasons to vote against Obama. Start with the fact that he’s the most pro-abortion candidate the Democrats have run since Roe v Wade. He’s pledged to pass the “Freedom of Choice Act”, and he’s said clearly that he’d advocate abortion for his daughters in the event of an unplanned pregnancy.
These things would explain clearly why he couldn’t win in Missouri.
I think Tom is making a point to the opposite of racism.
No, it’s not true that English has always been the language used in the U.S. Right here in St. Louis, for example, before World war I, German was the language used in many South St. Louis public schools (yes, paid for by taxpayers). There are many other examples of languages other than English being used officially in this country over the years. Now Missouri has put itself in the forefront of states that do not know what they are talking about.
Tom F, I hear you.
People, as far as being a racist goes, a yes on 1 and a no on Obama is about as much as we need to know about you. Check your hearts.
I’m proud to be an American this morning, but ashamed to be a Missourian.
Pro-Abortion does not equal pro-killing babies. Being pro-abortion does not mean that he walks through life chanting, “Kill Babies,” “Kill Babies.”
I actually heard a McCain supporter say this morning, “We voted for McCain because he’s going to keep the war going. The war is our bread and butter.” They’re a military family. It makes me sick to think there are some people out there that are using this war for a primary paycheck. THAT is a GREAT reason to NOT support McCain in my eyes.
What were Missourians voting for with McCain/Palin? More war? More economic collapse? More of being despised by other countries? More blood sucking fat cats? More ruin for the middle class? More racism? Not to mention Sarah Palin as President! I can’t understand why they got even a thousand votes, let alone half our state. The count will show just us as backward or forward. It’s the 21st century; we can’t go into it with 18th century attitudes. Get a calendar, Missouri!
Look at the county by county numbers if you want to understand why ‘Missourah’ would go to McCain. The populated centers which understand the necessity of doing things that are good for community and neighbor all voted decisively for Obama.
It’s the out-state, red-neck, gun-toting, christian bible-belt types that give this state a bad name and went for McCain.
St. Louis County/City, Columbia and Kansas City should cecede from the state and take our tax dollars with us.
Susan,
“I’m proud to be an American this morning, but ashamed to be a Missourian”.
I totally agree with you on that one.
With 100% of the precints reporting, McCain has won Missouri. What’s so hard to understand about that? The St Louis Post Dispatch has gone from being a voice of Mid-America, then to a voice of the St Louis region, and now it is degrading into the voice of St Louis city and county. It ought to rename itself the St Louis Town Journal.
I am NOT ashamed to be in Missouri nor am I ashamed of voting for English only. I think that is great. We need to establish English as the official language(for the country as well) and we can certainly have a secondary language as Spanish or something else. Some of these people leaving comments need a “reality” check. If you want to speak Spanish as your first language, why don’t you move somewhere else. It isn’t racist nor is it discrimination. Quit being a crybaby and realize that most (if not all) of our documents are in English, so it would make sense to keep it that way. Lets do what makes sense. Just as others have pointed out, if we moved to Europe, we would have to speak their NATIONAL language. Get a reality check on what is going on in the world.
I’m not clear on why intelligent people couldn’t vote for McCain. Certainly, there were reasons to be concerned about Obama
1) Connections to an extremely corrupt political machine
2) Pro-choice record
3) Inexperience
4) Anti-free trade stance
5) Terrible healthcare proposal (McCain’s wasn’t much better)
6) Increased tax burden on some people
I’m not suggesting that any of these are or should be dispositive, but to argue that all McCain voters are “out-state, red-neck, gun-toting, christian bible-belt types” is about the stupidest thing I’ve ever heard. Certainly, reasonable intelligent people can make a case for McCain.
Does the final count in MO matter?
Obama won, with the majority of the popular vote, with a landslide of electoral votes.
America’s majority has spoken clearly:
Racism sucks, religious extremism is unacceptable, and ‘fear’ politics is for losers.
No matter what happens in the next 4 years, America has shown the world it can and will ‘Do the Right Thing’.
Amen!
I support obama and I also supported making English the official language. My parents immigrated here from Poland 25+ years ago, and promptly learned English. My grandmother, however, did not. And she immigrated here just a few years before my parents had. Because she did not have to learn English, she did not. She was extremely dependent on her family, what if something happened to us? Sometimes people need to be put in a situation to learn English. Allowing bilingual use is only going to make it harder for immigrants to become productive citizens. Take, for example, my husband who works with non-english speaking immigrants. One worker noticed a customer stealing but was not able to effectively communicate the act until the customer had left. What if there was a bigger emergency? Being an American includes learning English, and we need to encourage immigrants to do so.
Hopefully the English only provision will be found unconstitutional, as it is, according to the “Freedom of Speech” in our 1st Ammendment.
I knew all the Dems heads would be popping off today. Some of the comments on here are really funny.
Missouri going Rep means two things for you crazy Dems. 1.) There are more reps in Missouri and more people that think the opposite of you. 2.) Even though Hussein won the overall, we are still a red state.
Like I always say.. you are either a Republican or a Baby killer. I guess the baby killers won this one.
Clint - the reason it’s not entirely clear that McCain has won Missouri yet is because there are potentially THOUSANDS
The Bush Administration-Republic Machine-McCain Maverick Deregulation nearly have collapsed the US Economy and the world’s economy. They are having riots in iceland…yes ICELAND. The people that voted for McCain/Palin don’t seem to understand what precipitated the rise and collapse of the housing/credit industry. All these social issues really don’t matter when you are sitting home unemployed. Try going to a ‘developing’ economy and you will see.
Hopefully Missouri will stay with McCain for two reasons to annoy the left wing St. Louis Dispatch which has been in the tank for Obama from day one and the wonderful sanctuary city of St. Louis in general….
Here we go folks. Precisely what we knew would happen. MO goes for Obama and the shrieks of “racism” begin. Same garbage that would have been applied to the entire country by the “journalists” at CNN, MS-NBC, AP, NY Times (I’ll stop there. List is way too long) if Obama has lost the election.
Race and race-baiting has been a constant theme of this election and the Dem primary, instigated not by Obama’s opponents, but by the Obama campaign, his supporters and surrogates in the media. If Bill Clinton of all people can get thrown under the bus as a “racist” for having the NERVE to stand in the way of “history”, anybody can. Laughable.
And it all came gushing out last night when Obama was announced the winner. All the talking heads could discuss was Obama’s race. Absolutely pitiful.
WAY TO GO MISSOURI! - They didn’t buy into the phony hype and race-baiting of the 1/3 term senator.
What still puzzles me is how the state could elect Democrat Nixon in a landslide (+18%) while not voting for Obama. Nixon and Obama have identical stances on the major issues and neither has any executive experience. I am glad that Obama won the national election. If you look at the numbers, Obama and Nixon performed identical in KC and St. Louis, but Nixon outperformed Obama in rural white Missouri. How can rural Missouri vote for Nixon on the same ballot as McCain when these two could not be more different in the political idealology? Missouri, you may not want to believe that race is a factor in our state, but the numbers don’t lie.
English only is unrealistic in this day and age. What will happen next? will they say sign language is unconstitutional also?
Guess, what… nobody cares what Missouri thinks. President Obama has been elected and Missouri doesn’t matter a hill of beans. Racism is alive and well in this state.
The fact of the matter is, despite the racists in MO, Obama has won. If you don’t like it, then Lamber Airport would like you to know they have planes standing by to take you ANYWHERE you want to go. But be warned, you’ll find most of the world far, far more liberal and open-minded than the US.
It is interesting that Dems swept statewide (except Kinder) but Obama (probably) lost. I am not saying that anybody who voted for Nixon and against Obama, or for Carnahan and against Obama is a racist. It is an obvious possibility that should be considered, however.
I also don’t think that if you support English only you are some latino hater. That is absurd. There are many good reasons to support English only, even though any of the meaningful provisions will violate the Equal Protection clause of the 14th Amendment and be struck down when challenged.
Now that English is the official state language, the voters of Missouri have disenfranchised nearly everyone south of a line from the Jeff County/Ste. Genevieve County line to Cole County and back down to Nevada (Nev-ADA)in Vernon County.
Guh goin’ y’all. (Or is it you’uns?)
Teresa,
I get a kick out of people like you who have to put others down in order to feel good about yourself. What a sad, pitiful life you lead.
A “testament” to the voters of Missouri?? The margin is less than 5,000 votes out of over 2.8 million cast. That’s part of a much more dramatic testament to how strongly Obama ran in ALL of the so-called battleground states.
At least a few people on here are disparaging Missouri for either choosing or not choosing Obama. Please remember: whoever gets the electoral votes, it’s almost 50-50. Personally I’m proud that Missouri is overall so moderate that every vote ends up counting.
is there any way to find out how many provisional and absentee ballots are remaining to be counted and from what counties they came?
100% of the prencincts have reported, but not all of the Presidential ballots have been tallied. Given the turnout yesterday, small wonder.
Missouri won’t change the outcome of the Presidential race, but it would be nice if in the coming week all of the close “red” states actually posted the final tallies.
Congratulations to President-Elect Obama.
Kudos, to Senator McCain. I felt his concession speech was one of the better I have heard. I was saddened by the “boos” from his crowd which detracted from the grace and integrity of his moment. I truly hope the Republican party lets Senator McCain and others like him to remold it away from the unilaterist, ultr-conservative, “evangelical” party it has become.
Thanks to MackDaddy for pointing out that the only two political choices we have are Republican or Baby Killer. I guess in his twisted, sick world that may be, but not in mine.
And he thinks Democrats are crazy?
Yawl know none us here folks south of St. Louie could vote fer a colored feller jes as none em folks in St. Louie could vote fer the white feller.
Did you folks ever stop to think that people could support a democrat on the local level and a republican on the national without it being totally racial? One guy governs the state, the other our country and world.
Racial charges are flying because of Missouri not voting Obama….It’s a good thing the country didn’t vote McCain, Jesse and Al would surpass Buffett and Gates as the richest men in the country as they pimped race all the way to the bank.
Re: Amendment 1. Actually, if you read your history books, Missouri was owned by both Spain and France before English-speaking folks took over. ^_^ I voted no because there was no room in the amendment for common sense use of another language, such as in an emergency or for legalese Latin phrases. Carried to its most stringent application, phrases like “quid pro quo” and “caveat emptor” could be deemed unconstitutional for use in public business. How silly is that?
Re: Missouri as a bellwether. Frankly, I hope we recount. It’s a pride thing, to be sure, but I just need to know *for sure*, including all the provisionals and absentees, how Missouri voted. I’m losing sleep over it. ^_^
I had to complete a provisional ballot in Jackson County (KC area). I as given a PIN number and phone number to call after 14 days to find out if my vote was counted, which means it .
I also hope there are enough provisional ballots to put Obama over the edge.
Given that “scapegoat” means “one that is made to bear the blame of others,” it would certainly be the right word for Nader in this case. I’m not sure I understand how Obama had some kind of prior claim on the votes of those people who supported Nader.
