Missouri a squeaker — McCain, for now, may have an edge
+St. Louis County election officials finally released their tally at 1 a.m. Wednesday. Then they issued a new total at 1:32 a.m.
Democrat Barack Obama – 330,157
Republican John McCain – 219,787
Obama’s 110,370 margin is a record-setting lead for a Democrat in the county, the state’s largest bloc of votes.
But it’s unclear if that is enough for Obama to squeak out a victory, thus preserving Missouri’s status as the best bellwether in the country.
A quick addition here of the county’s final, with the existing 1 a.m. statewide totals from elsewhere, initially appeared to give McCain a statewide lead of about 400 votes.
BUT, after the county’s updated tally at 1:32 p.m., it initially appeared that Obama could be up statewide by about 1,500 votes.
None of those totals include any of the rumored 4,000 provisional ballots in the city of St. Louis and St. Louis County that likely would be pro-Obama.
BUT, at 2 a.m., the state had revised its tally again, to include additional votes from Christian County.
The result: McCain had an edge of about 4,800 votes.
State GOP executive director Jared Craighead said he expected McCain’s victory to stand. He called it “a testament to the voters of Missouri.”
Expect a long battle over all those provisional ballots, especially if there are thousands more in Kansas City.
Independent Ralph Nader could once again be the scapegoat. He got 17,469 Missouri votes.

I knew all the Dems heads would be popping off today. Some of the comments on here are really funny.
Missouri going Rep means two things for you crazy Dems. 1.) There are more reps in Missouri and more people that think the opposite of you. 2.) Even though Hussein won the overall, we are still a red state.
Like I always say.. you are either a Republican or a Baby killer. I guess the baby killers won this one.
Clint - the reason it’s not entirely clear that McCain has won Missouri yet is because there are potentially THOUSANDS
The Bush Administration-Republic Machine-McCain Maverick Deregulation nearly have collapsed the US Economy and the world’s economy. They are having riots in iceland…yes ICELAND. The people that voted for McCain/Palin don’t seem to understand what precipitated the rise and collapse of the housing/credit industry. All these social issues really don’t matter when you are sitting home unemployed. Try going to a ‘developing’ economy and you will see.
Hopefully Missouri will stay with McCain for two reasons to annoy the left wing St. Louis Dispatch which has been in the tank for Obama from day one and the wonderful sanctuary city of St. Louis in general….
Here we go folks. Precisely what we knew would happen. MO goes for Obama and the shrieks of “racism” begin. Same garbage that would have been applied to the entire country by the “journalists” at CNN, MS-NBC, AP, NY Times (I’ll stop there. List is way too long) if Obama has lost the election.
Race and race-baiting has been a constant theme of this election and the Dem primary, instigated not by Obama’s opponents, but by the Obama campaign, his supporters and surrogates in the media. If Bill Clinton of all people can get thrown under the bus as a “racist” for having the NERVE to stand in the way of “history”, anybody can. Laughable.
And it all came gushing out last night when Obama was announced the winner. All the talking heads could discuss was Obama’s race. Absolutely pitiful.
WAY TO GO MISSOURI! - They didn’t buy into the phony hype and race-baiting of the 1/3 term senator.
What still puzzles me is how the state could elect Democrat Nixon in a landslide (+18%) while not voting for Obama. Nixon and Obama have identical stances on the major issues and neither has any executive experience. I am glad that Obama won the national election. If you look at the numbers, Obama and Nixon performed identical in KC and St. Louis, but Nixon outperformed Obama in rural white Missouri. How can rural Missouri vote for Nixon on the same ballot as McCain when these two could not be more different in the political idealology? Missouri, you may not want to believe that race is a factor in our state, but the numbers don’t lie.
English only is unrealistic in this day and age. What will happen next? will they say sign language is unconstitutional also?
Guess, what… nobody cares what Missouri thinks. President Obama has been elected and Missouri doesn’t matter a hill of beans. Racism is alive and well in this state.
The fact of the matter is, despite the racists in MO, Obama has won. If you don’t like it, then Lamber Airport would like you to know they have planes standing by to take you ANYWHERE you want to go. But be warned, you’ll find most of the world far, far more liberal and open-minded than the US.
It is interesting that Dems swept statewide (except Kinder) but Obama (probably) lost. I am not saying that anybody who voted for Nixon and against Obama, or for Carnahan and against Obama is a racist. It is an obvious possibility that should be considered, however.
I also don’t think that if you support English only you are some latino hater. That is absurd. There are many good reasons to support English only, even though any of the meaningful provisions will violate the Equal Protection clause of the 14th Amendment and be struck down when challenged.
Now that English is the official state language, the voters of Missouri have disenfranchised nearly everyone south of a line from the Jeff County/Ste. Genevieve County line to Cole County and back down to Nevada (Nev-ADA)in Vernon County.
Guh goin’ y’all. (Or is it you’uns?)
