Missouri officially a red state — but barely

This just in from the Associated Press:

Republican John McCain has defeated President-elect Barack Obama in Missouri _ the last state to be decided in the 2008 presidential election.
McCain’s narrow victory over Obama breaks a bellwether streak in which Missourians had picked the winning presidential candidate in every election since 1956.
With all jurisdictions reporting complete but unofficial results, McCain led Obama by 3,632 votes Wednesday out of more than 2.9 million cast _ a margin of 0.12 percentage points.

This only slightly embarrassing for me. The St. Louis area, and Missouri, has taken so many kick to the nuts lately that I’ve become numb. Losing the final four tournament, losing AB, metrolink loses voting approval, and now the state goes Red….in one of the most important elections in my lifetime.

St. Louis city and county got it right, but go outside the county lines…and this is still rebuplican country. That probably won’t change for a while, amazingly.

This state is not red, it’s a deep purple and it’s going to be bluer in 2 years when Kit Bond is pummeled by Robin Carnahan and even bluer in 4 when Obama wins MO handily.

“Enjoy” it now, Palinites.

No big surprise here! Missouri simply does not represent a true cross section of the country anymore due to the changing demographics in the nation. While most states have seen an increase in the latino and oriental poplulations, we have not had this occur today. It still shocks us to see latinos perform landscaping and lawncare instead of the teen up the street. Many things still don’t effect us to the extremes that occur in the coastal states, in the deep south or the upper north. We are still the laid back southern state located in the north. All good things, even overrated ones must come to an end. So the same goes for the status as a bellweather state!

I can get the internet in my car, send a text message to my friends in New York and people are flying into space all the time…but it takes us over 2 weeks to find out who the president is…something about this just doesn’t seem right.

Guess what Missouri Repulicans - this time you got it WRONG…and if you vote for Palin in 2012 you will be WRONG…again

It really sucks that Mccain won our state. I am still proud of all those people that waitned in the long lines in the city and voted for president elect Obama. Maybe one of these days some of the outer part of this state will catch up with the rest of us in MIssouri! For now at least the right man won the overall election and for that I am happy!

It was a foregone conclusion 48 hours after the votes were tallied. However, to appease Willy Junior, who wanted the illegally cast provisional votes in his district to count for Obama, little Ms Robin Democrat waited until now to certify the results. Apparently the majority of those provisional ballots were illegally cast. Not surprising considering the area from which they came. Albeit, the majority of Missourians registered correctly and voted legally and that’s why McCain/Palin took Missouri. Nobama for Missourians, and now it’s certified that way.

Thank goodness for the people in Missouri who don’t get their newa from SNL, Katie Couric or John Stewart. It is good to know there are enough people in Missouri who actually remember studying in school what Socialism is, and that it has been proven time and time again to be a failed government system. It is amazing to me how many people do not understand that CHANGE = SOCIALISM in this last election. And oh by the way, where is all this “so-called” CHANGE that Obama ran on? So far all his appointees are Clinton re-treads, and Al Qaeda’s second in command Zawahri has already lobbed insults and warnings to Obama. This is serious business folks; I sincerely hope Obama is a strong President for us. There are people intent on destroying America, let’s see how funny this is to SNL and Jon Stewart, who make fun of people as being “stupid” if they disagree with their viewpoints. Maybe Katie Couric can come up with a serious question for Obama when she interviews him, instead of the stupid questions she asked of Palen during the election process - Couric totally missed the boat on that nterview and showed herself to be inept of the real issues at hand.

3:54 pm November 19th, 2008

Hey Clint, you do realize that there is nothing sinister about a provisional ballot, right? It’s a ballot cast in the event a voter’s registration can’t be immediately verified for some reason, and it, by design, is only counted if the registration can be verified. There is nothing “illegal” about a provisional ballot, regardless of whether or not it is counted.

^^^^^^ WOW….you right wing fanatics never cease to amaze me. You know that Missouri also has some of the worst funded education and healthcare in the country, thanks to our “pull your self up by your bootstraps, even if I have my foot on your neck” minded Republican legislature! Oh yes we have 800 million in the treasury, but what good is that when schools are failing, people cant afford healthcare and public transit is left to fail. Oh yes….the answer to all of our problems is fiscal conservatism, social conservatism, conservative conservatism…..lets just conserve and conserve and conserve while the pie keeps shrinking and shrinking and shrinking! Its funny how people on these blogs always mock Illinois taxes and cost of living, but never bring up that Illinois has better schools, hospitals, infrastructure, economic growth, diversity and is home to a world class city that we continue to despise for the next 100 years! Man those Dems have really ruined Illinois!

The preceding post about socialism and John Stewart–it’s a parody, right? I mean, do we still have members of the U.N. Black Helicopter crowd running around loose? What’s that? Oh, I see. We do. SLU Professor Ken Warren got it right on Fox 2 when he chalked this whole thing up to the “redneck, racist vote” in MO. Thirty-eight per-cent of the population in MO. is evangelical Christian. That means twits who think being African-American is the mark of Cain, who believe the Flintstones was a documentary, and who believe in ghosts and spirits but not in evolution. As long as these double-digit IQ dweebs are running around, this is what we get.

i guess everytime i’m handed CHANGE, it is SOCIALISM.
or when i CHANGE my pants it is SOCIALIST.

I am proud of Missourians, they ignored the name calling and bigotry from those with different viewpoints and dismissed the biased media to stand by their convictions and vote for who they thought to be the best candidate.

Here’s what socialism is……giving 700 billion to Wall Street, giving billions to the insurance industry, bailing out the auto industry…that’s socialism at its finest. As Jon Stewart wisely stated on one of his shows, with big business, we socialize their losses and privatize their profits.

If you don’t believe me, default on your car loan and see if GM will throw your account into their bailout plan.

Missouri is a red state…just barely. Big deal. On the brighter side the right wing zealots can throw their conspiracy theories about Robin Carnahan fabricating votes out the window. It was a close race so she was obligated to make sure the count was legit.

Regarding socialism… I don’t think most of the right wing bobbleheads know what it means. They throw the term around loosely and as a scare tactic… First of all, most younger voters don’t even remember the Cold War so the label made no impact during the election. Second, our current Republican President has engaged in more socialism and big government than any other in recent history. Government bailouts and nation building… It is no wonder why the Republican party is in shambles… they lost their core values. The religious right has made abortion the number one issue for their party.

They better get their act together and figure out what issues really matter to Main Street Americans.

My grandmother was calling the MO legislature “mossbacks” 30 years ago and she was 82 at the time!! While she was conservative herself, she believed the state should progress with the times. Obviously, it hasn’t. Now Missouri can be called the Mossback State rather than the Bellwether state. We complain about the strife in our lives, but by Gum, don’t CHANGE (will this be edited out for profanity?) anything or try to make anything better!

We will simply look to 2012 for MO to become a blue state……..or purple, as President-Elect Obama has stated.

Missouri joins Arkansas, Oklahoma, Nebraska and Kansas as another red state. Total bummer. Especially for an election like this one, where it was so blatantly obvious which candidate was the more intelligent and capable leader.

— Ms STL - I like your response. I’d like to ad in 2008 the information age why did it take 5-8 hours to vote in some areas and 30 mins in others? One can go online and find out how many voters are register in a certain area so why was an area with (example) 2K voters sent 1K paper ballots and as few as 3 machines? It’s cheaper to print paper and it could be used in a pinch should the machines fail? It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure this out. Voting for some in our community is still not a right. We have a long way to go for freedom. Someone should loose their job over this. Oh but this didn’t happen in Chesterfield or Clayton who cares right?!?!

Okay -I can accept with that.

Jay Nixon wins by a landslide/Barack Obama loses. It seems out-state Missouri refused to vote for a African-American. I would guess that when some visit St. Louis and get passed on the shoulder, see all of this litter, hear constant gunshots and have something stolen from them they assume all blacks are like this. I wish they could see that we elected the proper direction for this country to head in and not just an African-American.

This is quite a shame to see people assuming others are backwards or racist based upon their vote in this election. For some yes there were race matters involved in their decision, but to make such a general statement is not responsable. The quotes regarding extreme right wing Christians is also out of line, I know many evangelicals that did not vote in this election due to Obama being a Pro-Choice canadiate and McCain’s wife owning one of the largest distributorships of acohol in the country, both of which are against their religion. No matter who you voted for, you should be proud that the system still works and so many were involved, a large amount for the first time ever! Now we must all stand behind the man that has been chosen, not matter if you voted for him or not, and hope that he is a strong leader and does not put us in the weak position of so many other countries. He must defend and protect our country, both economically and through military force. I hope that when he acts just as any other poltician with his policies and back peddling it does not disenfranchise all of the first time voters in this election. They must understand that their voice still should be heard. Even if I do not agree with it.

Bellwether status, who cares? It didn’t mean anything when we had that label, it doesn’t mean anything now that we don’t. Missouri tends to run behind the times just a bit, always has. But it’s catching up. My neighborhood has a great mix of races, religions, ages and backgrounds, a huge change from when I grew up here, I’m delighted to say. And even more delighted to say the overwhelming majority of my neighbors throughout the city and county voted for Obama (and for a Democratic governor, don’t forget). The state total was way too close for anyone to be crowing or lamenting about how “red” the state is. It’s bluer than it was before, and vote by vote, it will be bluer still. I am not concerned about the crazy folks sitting around muttering “socialism”, they’re increasingly irrelevant. So what if Missouri’s electoral votes went to McCain, fat lot of good that does him. The best candidate still won, and every single vote for him is one more voice for change. I will be celebrating on January 20th along with the rest of the nation, and then getting to work on making sure we have another Democratic senator from Missouri in 2010.

5:12 pm November 19th, 2008

Here is a question:
Since the vote difference was way under 1% .12%, should President Elect Obama demand a recount?

Actually, I would be intersted in knowing the breakouts and their geographic locations. With as many counties as Missouri has (114) this represents an average of 31.86 voter difference in each county. Obviously this is not how it broke out.

Hardly a massive sweep for the Republicans in this state.

5:16 pm November 19th, 2008

Oh please Sue D…sour grapes make the hooded ones even more ugly. What do you call bailing out wealthy white men but socialism?
The losers are now dragging out the old crap that Obama is not a citizen and as such, can’t be holding the office. The most vote fraud in MO was St Charles county, a repub area. MO judges tried to get pot bag felons to not vote while repubs let their felons run for office like Stevens. I’d worry more that you don’t have decent whistleblower or labor laws in your state. Very backwards place. We need more outstaters like the rednecks for Obama crew. You all need some birth control hooders. Nothing else…just birth control. We don’t need more of you anti-american fussbudgets who are non-productive. Whine elsewhere. Now go bend over so the wall streeters can drill a bit more. Crack a weak smile while they do so they know you are with that program. Maybe you can move to Idaho where the schoolkids yell ASSASSINATE OBAMA and pale fundies rule.

Hey! ‘your toast’! A legally cast provisional ballot is one that is cast at the poll where the voter is supposed to be voting, but his/her name isn’t on the roll. However, after it is verified that the provisional ballot was cast at the correct polling site, then it is counted. That is a legally cast provisional ballot. An illegally cast provisional ballot is one that is cast by a voter who is not on the roll, and IS NOT ENTITLED TO VOTE AT THAT POLLING SITE. It amazes me how a peoples who claim to care about their rights, can’t even figure out where in the blazes to vote. It is on your voter registration card. Given the history of the north St Louis area, I have no doubt whatsoever that people in that area voted multiple times because they thought all their ballots might be counted. And if you read the Post Dispatch, Willy Jr. stated that he believed all the provisional ballots should be counted, regardless of whether or not the ballot was cast at the appropriate poll.

The comments of some of the liberals on here show they are prone to attacking someone personally with whom they disagree politically, and a tendency to resort to vitriol rather than substantive arguments. This only serves to undermine your viewpoint and makes you look bad. Redistribution of wealth is Socialism, and has been shown time and time again to fail. I am against the bailouts; companies that can’t compete or are mismanaged should be allowed to fail. These companies may be bought up by others who can make a success of them. Gas prices are down, don’t hear those who blamed Bush when they were high, giving him credit now that they are down. It has been over 7 years since America was attacked on 9/11/2001 - did not see anything on that from Olbermann or Matthews during the election campaigns. I am clinging to my Bible and praying for America and our new President.

Right you are that there have been on attacks in America since 9/11. Tell me……….prior to that when was the last time America was attacked on AMERICAN SOIL by foreigners? Can’t, can ya? It should tell you something with Colin Powell steps down b/c he himself doesn’t agree with his Commander in Chief.
Anyway, I have no issue with good healthcare, I have no issue with telling people they can’t pack a 747 assault rifle, and I have no issue with homosexuals getting married. More important issues on the table than that.

What is really sad about some of these comments is the charge made that if you voted for McCain/Palin, you were racist. That drum has been beat to death and only the most ignorant of our society falls for it anymore. This country has bent over backward since WWII to try and ensure opportunity for everyone. Now that Obama is president, society can be more vocal in denouncing the racist accusation. Those yelling racist are those who still have their hands out rather than pitching in and applying themselves to the task. Try earning your way instead of expecting others to foot your expenses.

Oh well. I take solace in knowing that I live in one of the bluest, most Democratic locales in the United States– St. Louis City. In fact St. Louis City is actually bluer than many major cities in blue states. This is a classic case of Missouri vs. Missourah and this time Missourah won (unfortunately). But that’s okay. The urban/rural dichotomy is not unique to this state. All this election does is solidify the perception that Missourah is full of backwoods, ignorant, racist white trash who vote against their own best interests. That’s okay because St. Louis and its surrounding suburbs are somewhat insulated from that mentality. For all those scorned Missouri Democrats– don’t blame St. Louis for this call. Feel sorry for it instead.

A landslide victory for Jay Nixon, a narrow loss for Barack Obama. Each man endorsed the other; both men come from the same party; both men hold essentially the same political points of view. How does one win by such a huge margin and one not?

It’s downright shameful.

for all of you hate mongers in here that suggest that I voted against Obama but for Jay Nixon because I am a racist, I just want to say that I voted against Obama because of his inexperience, the fact that he almost refused to make his votes public in the Senate (by voted present most of the time), for making it sound like a vote against him was racist, and because he wanted to double the capital gains tax (even Clinton LOWERED the captial gains tax)

Certainly not everyone who voted against Obama is a racist. That’s ludicrous. I see no problem with staunch Republicans and generally right-leaning moderates voting as they always have. We can agree to disagree on issues and have an open honest dialogue. The person I have a problem with is anyone who is a lifelong Democrat, who never voted Republican in their lives and has now voted for a Republican candidate for the first time ever after eight years of the most unpopular Republican administration in history during the worst economic crisis since the Great Depression saying that race had nothing to do with it.

Coat it with excuses of inexperience, or voting records or anything else you want, but at its core it is still racism.

The answer is no. Because our economy is in the toilet thanks in large part to George W. Bush.

At this point, does it really matter that Missouri is red? Enough states got it right, and that’s why Obama is our president-elect. With him being so close to turning this state blue, I still view that as being great progress. I’m sure he’s in no way disappointed in the outcome and the American people shouldn’t be disappointed either. Unfortunately, it will take some people time for it to settle in, and while they’re still trying to figure out how or why this happened, other Americans will have a joyous time celebrating our choice.

Get off your high horses and quit talking about how outstate missouri is close minded with you cannot even accept that people may have legitimate, well founded believes based on issues important to them.
