Obama gains on McCain in St. Louis County’s rerun of numbers
Missouri’s presidential results got 699 votes tighter — without those as-yet-uncounted provisional ballots — after St. Louis County completed a new final tally of its votes in Tuesday’s election.
Political Fix got a copy of those tallies, including the township-by-township breakdown, this morning.
The county is the state’s largest voting bloc, and had thousands of voting machines and optical scanners in use. After retallying all the machines, and rechecking the scanners, the county’s final results changed.
The county also included some military ballots that apparently didn’t get counted Tuesday night.
The new county totals have yet to be reported to the secretary of state’s office.
The upshot in the presidential contest’s new official final numbers from St. Louis County:
Democrat Barack Obama-Joe Biden – 332,085 (up 1,928 from election night number now on state elections Web site)
Republican John McCain-Sarah Palin – 221,016 (up 1,229 from election night number)
The third-party candidates all gained a few as well.
The new county results reduces McCain’s statewide edge to 5,160 votes (from the 5,859 now on state Web site.)
Elections officials all over the state are just now going through roughly 7,000 provisional ballots that are not included in the statewide tally, until it can be verified which of those ballots were cast by properly registered voters at the right polling place.

Now that it’s too late to matter, the Washington Post admitted it was biased in its election coverage:

Anyone think the Post will even do this little thing?
Ahhhhhh! So close. I just wish Obama could’ve pulled off a win here…
I suspect if the state can gin up enough Obama votes to put Missouri over the top, it will be front page news the next day (whenever counting is finished).
If it can’t and McCain ends up winning Missouri, we will see a small back page story the day after inauguration. Why? It shouldn’t matter, Obama still wins the presidential election either way.
Regardless of editorial wants and desire, actual news should come first. Prove to us that it still matters and publish the results, regardless of outcome, with equal placing and timing.
That is my challenge to the Post-Dispatch.
It is would be great a great victory for Missouri if it could pull off a win regardless of the actions of rural Missourians. Hopefully rural Missourians will develop the kind of hearts that will allow them to vote for Obama the next time around in 4 years after he proves to these he is a great leader and are doing right and good by them also.
OakvilleVoter,
Your frontpage/backpage scenario reminds me of the Dog Bites Man vs Man Bites Dog headline.
The Obama winning Missouri would be front page because it would be a CHANGE of our assumed notions of what happened on Tuesday. The McCain story would just be a confirmation of assumed notions, and as such not as newsworthy.
Jo,
So where are the township breakdowns?
These close numbers show how crucial the pro-life lit drop on the Sunday before the election at churches across Missouri was to John McCain’s Missouri victory.
In response to Suzyjax:
When we get the township-by-township numbers in an electronic format, hopefully within a day or two, we will post them.
Right now, I have them only on paper. And we’re talking 200 or so pages. Too time-consuming to scan, especially since we’ll get the electronic form shortly.
And in response to those who imply some sort of political shenanigans: The county Election Board is run by Republicans, since the governor is a Republican. (The board’s control shortly will switch, when Democrat Jay Nixon is sworn in.)
The Republicans running the board would no doubt prefer to see a wider spread for McCain, not for Obama. But they’re playing it straight; the numbers are what they are.
Thanks Jo.
I did look on the county’s website and it wasn’t posted there, either.
How long does it generally take to tally the provisional ballots? Any idea when AP etc. are likely to call the race?
The real story of the new St. Louis County numbers is that Jim Lembke more than doubled his margin over Joan Barry in the 1st state senate race (now 119 votes; was 56). Going to be harder for her to make this up, even with 260 provisionals to be checked (which may already be in this updated count). Normally only about 40% of provisionals are counted. Even if Barry won all of them (104), she’d still lose by 15 votes.
With these new numbers, why hasn’t the SoS updated her website? (it still shows a 56 vote margin)
To Numbers matter.
Exactly. The tightening of that state senate race is news. It should be reported. In fact, all votes should be reported. Since I live in that district, the outcome of that election will mean something to me. The presidential election is over and the outcome has been determined.
Instead of calling rural voters names, why not look at how they have voted in the past?
They didn’t vote for Al Gore or John Kerry either. And I suspect any votes Bill Clinton got came from him being from the neighboring state of Arkansas.
All I really want is for all votes to be counted fairly and reported fairly. And I wish President-Elect Obama all the best. Our country needs him to do the best job possible, as soon as possible. I truly mean that, and yes, I voted for John McCain.
Lots of effort on this recount which is meaningless. It is a shame that something as incredibly important as the US Constitution is ignored. We still do not know if Obama is eligible for the office. Don’t you think that is important?
I live in Very rural Miller County. I canvassed hard for Our President Elect and I found many, many supporters for Obama. Sadly, I also found that the smear and fear tactics via TV commercials the last week of the campaign worked for the Divisive Sen McCain whom has no shame…..They even managed to get my Aunt to change her mind….SO please don’t think that us here in rural MO are that racist, I saw by my own GOTV that we aren’t. But LIES, HATE,SMEAR and FEAR politics sadly still work. Thank Goodness President Elect Obama won by not using character assination, he won on policy.

Didn’t Obama lose votes that other Democrats got due to his more liberal gun control advocacy?
“It is a shame that something as incredibly important as the US Constitution is ignored. We still do not know if Obama is eligible for the office. Don’t you think that is important?”
Think, where’s that come from? What is it that has you going on that? Do you think he is Muslim, too? I mean, after all, his middle name is “Hussein,” that’s gotta prove something, right?
It is called the US Constitution. He must be a natural born citizen. He has failed to show that. Is this so hard for you to understand? I do not think he is Muslin — at least not at this point in his life. I have suspicions that he was not born in Hawaii, but all we need to prove/disprove that is his birth certificate released. It really is very simple and he owes the people that much.
Believe me, I certainly do hope that he was in fact born in Hawaii. That would avoid a Constitutional crisis. Until he settles this once and for all, it will be a growing question. John McCain release his full birth certificate. The state of Hawaii has the full version on file. He just has to release it.
Hey Think,
I think you may find this of interest.
http://blog.washingtonpost.com/fact-checker/2008/05/citizen_mccain.html
Also, will you please SHUT UP sounding like a broken record, I really try to not tell people to shut-up but in thios case WILL YOU STOP BEATING THOSE DELUSIONAL THOUGHTS IN YOUR HEAD TO DEATH!
Obama is an American citizen and his birth certificate is on file and has been produced by him and I posted it for you before.
Furthermore,if you know that the State of Hawaii has the full version on file, that tells a person with normal mental functions that he is a born citizen of the State of Hawaii, meaning that he is a U.S. citizen.
How more stupid can one behave as? PLEASE STOP IT, you are embarrassing yourself and the Republican Party.
What Obama has released is insufficient. It is not the full version of the certificate. Also keep in mind that the full certificate with the state of Hawaii MAY simply be a registration of a live birth OUTSIDE of Hawaii. Until we SEE the full certificate, we will not know the truth.
This is so SIMPLE to understand, which obviously is a bit too difficult for your STUPID little brain. His OWN GRANDMOTHER says he was not BORN in Hawaii. Do you hate grandmothers?
DAWN,
BHO won because his people ran a smarter campaign, not on better policy. He reached out to a segment of voters and won them over. Now, all he has to do is attempt to keep all of the campaign promises he made. Time will tell on that issue. He was asked a very basic tax question at his first conference the other day, surprise , surprise,,,,,same ole Washington politics,,, he didn’t, couldn’t, wouldn’t answer it.
Please Bill, stop giving us your GOP taliking points, the election is over, you lost!
The “lit drop” didn’t do anything except expose the hypocrisy of the church leraders in supporting the GOP candidate which doesn’t support the Roman Catholic Church’s “non-negotiable” views on abortion, stem cell research, marriage and torture.
I’d say that you and your sycophantic wealthy donors to the Annual Appeal need to get the facts along with the, at best, mislead leadership of our Catholic Church. It’s no wonder working Catholics won’t listen to the trust fund dependent leadership of the Catholic Church which knee-jerkedly supports the GOP every election, despite its failure to take action on life issues and the GOP radical neoconservative corporatist agenda which is completely contrary to Catholic values.
Actually, the U.S. Constitution gives us no guidance as to what makes a person a Natural Born Citizen. Title 8 section 1401 of the U.S. Code describes the criteria for the Natural Born Status. Although McCain was born in Panama, both he and Obama meet the criteria. Take a look, it’s kind of interesting stuff. As to Obama releasing his Birth Certificate, he has done so, look to Snopes and Fact Check. This is just the last desperate hope of a few fringe nut jobs clinging to the lost possibility that a Black man is not actually going to be President. Guess what, he will be sworn in. Get over it! Blacks got over the fact he is half white, I think most whites have shown they have no problem with him being half Black!
Gosh Tim Hogan, do I use GOP talking points? I am just an ordinary St. Louis Catholic. All the local political leaders I contribute to are Democrats, except maverick John Campisi, who just got beat.
How racist of you Richard. This issue has been alive and ignored by the press since mid summer. This is a Constitutional issue, not a black/white issue. The issue is at the Supreme Court now. Obama is required to respond to the assertions in the law suit by Dec. 1st. If he is a true leader, he will simply release the document and end this issue. Also, perhaps there will be a little more clarity around who verifies the natural born citizen requirement. If Obama was smart, he would have taken care of this months ago.
Keep counting and recounting the votes in the metro areas. Sooner or later you will come up with a way to declare Missouri for Obama. If the election board can’t do it, they can hire ACORN.
Perhaps it is time that Missouri and others lose their “bellweather” status. The population of the US has been shifting for the past 50 years in some interesting ways.
As to the birth certificate issue, President Elect Obama’s mother was a natural born US citizen, she never renounced her citizenship. It does not make any difference where he was born, he is a natural born US citizen.
The last person to run for President who was not technically an US citizen was Senator Barry Goldwater. That was because Arizona was a Territory at the time he was born. This burning issue was solved by declaring anyone born in an US territory was defacto a natural born US citizen.
“The “lit drop” didn’t do anything except expose the hypocrisy of the church leraders in supporting the GOP candidate which doesn’t support the Roman Catholic Church’s “non-negotiable” views on abortion, stem cell research, marriage and torture.”
That comment was so good I had to reiterate. McCain is against torture though, I think.
