Roman holiday: Veteran political consultant runs for alderman

Judi Roman — a veteran Democratic consultant who has run campaigns across the city and state — will now be consulting for herself.

Roman this afternoon put her name on the ballot for 23rd Ward alderman, where incumbent Kathleen Hanrahan is not seeking re-election.

The race for the seat — once held by Mayor Francis Slay — is quickly becoming a crowded one. Roman will face at least three other Democrats in the March primary: car wash owner Joe Vaccaro, Lindenwood Park’s Colleen Bridges, a community college instructor, and public health analyst Mary E. Homan.

Roman has been involved in local politics and public relations for decades, repping, among many others, former State Treasurer Nancy Farmer and ex-mayor Clarence Harmon.

I really don’t want my Alderman to be a grease monkey/carwash attendant or a room mother. If Kathy isn’t running again, I think we deserve a professional like Roman. I’ve never heard of Homan, so I can’t make an opinion on her.

Whoever has the backing of the Slay organization will have an even bigger than usual advantage this time, because two candidates who have crossed swords with the mayor or the organization will split the anti-organization vote. Vaccaro has unsuccessfully opposed the Slay organization candidate several times in the past, including a loss to Hanrahan. Mayor Slay became mayor by unseating Roman’s former boss, Clarence Harmon.

The mayor’s father has been committeeman since 1964, when he was the insurgent outsider who unseated incumbent Bill Sommers.

A lawyer who represents himself has a fool for a client.

So, too, campaign consultants - who tells them no?

As a political consultant, I can tell you that some of the worst clients are those that think they know what they are doing. This includes community organizers, near-do-wells who have run in but never won a contest, and armchair political observers. Those that are easiest to work with are those that have won elections but are still willing to listen to advice, and those without any experience and listen completely to their advisers. So, if Roman, with her immense experience is willing to use that experience, but also be open to new ideas, she will have the best chances of winning.
