Slay — and Pujols — back pro soccer franchise in the Metro East

Mayor Francis Slay, a championship soccer player in college, is backing a bid by a high-powered lawyer and an even more high-powered slugger to bring professional soccer to the St. Louis area — even if it is on the other side of the river.

Slay is urging community support for a plan by attorney Jeff Cooper — co-founder of the East Alton asbestos litigation firm SimmonsCooper — to bring a Major League Soccer franchise to the region.

Cooper’s effort has at least one big-name investor: Cardinals first baseman and reigning MVP Albert Pujols.

Slay praised as “next-to-perfect” Cooper’s desired location of a stadium in Collinsville, ten minutes from downtown St. Louis.

“I support Jeff’s project for many of the same reasons I support the new Mississippi River Bridge: it keeps the city at the center of the region,” Slay writes on his website. “The key to securing the franchise is a strong demonstration of community and corporate support … I strongly urge you to step up now.”

Slay attended what is now Quincy University in Illinois, where he tried out for the soccer team as a walk-on. He made the squad and became a pivotal part of three national championships.

Love the idea of proffesional soccer in St.Louis. You might want to check your demographics and see if Ill. is the right choice. I live 20 minutes west of STL and Collinsville is just too far. I will not see games because of this.

I live near the proposed site. I have commuted to St. Louis for the last 20 years. This is an easy trip. It takes me less than 10 minutes to get to the Poplar Street bridge in rush hour traffic. Before you judge the location, try the drive.

You presume everyone in St. Louis lives downtown. They don’t. If you live in West County it just takes too long to get to Collinsville to make seeing a game worthwhile.

I live in Washington, MO, and my family would drive to Collinsville to support the MLS team, if they come. If I don’t mind that drive, then why would anybody living in North, South or West County? The true soccer fans will find a way to make the games. The thing is…are there enough hardcore soccer fans out there to make it worthwhile?

I am a soccer mom from the east side. I have been driving my sons over the river to play select soccer in West St. Louis County & St. Charles County for years. It won’t hurt you guys from St.Louis to make the trip over to Collinsville. Its a great place. It would just be farther out west.
Thanks for your support Slay & Albert! Go! Cooper!

Mike from West County –

Do you drive downtown for Cardinal games? See the Blues? Catch the Rams? Do you wind around downtown before entering your parking ramp? Do you circle around your ramp once you’re there looking for an open spot?

If you do, you’d already be in your seat at the new Collinsville soccer stadium.

It’s only 9 miles further, with no traffic, and no parking ramp.

And a whole lot of fun.
