“Super” Dem Chappelle-Nadal backs Gibbons for AG
Chappelle-Nadal
We’ve heard of several Republicans crossing party lines to support Democrat Jay Nixon in the governor’s race.
But University City State Rep. Maria Chappelle-Nadal appears to be the first major Democratic official to support a Republican statewide candidate in Missouri.
Chapelle Nadal, who was a “super delegate” to this year’s Democratic convention in Denver, is backing Republican Mike Gibbons in the attorney general’s race over Democrat Chris Koster, who grew up in University City.
She’s even recorded a radio spot making a pitch for the GOPer from Kirkwood.
“The reason why I am supporting Mike Gibbons is because he is a man of character. He has always worked with both sides of the aisle very well,” Chappelle-Nadal said in an interview this morning. “He is a man of honor.”
Though Chappelle-Nadal says they differ on some key social issues — “he’s pro-life, I’m pro-choice” — she says Gibbons has been more supportive of women’s rights than Koster.
In particular, Chappelle-Nadal points to a 2007 law that helps protect the privacy of rape victims and ensures that they do not have to pay for their own “rape kit” exam.
Koster was one of only four senators to vote against the bill.
“That vote,” a tearful Chappelle-Nadal said of Koster’s objection, “was an immoral vote for women.”

I’ve already expressed my support for Maria’s intentions here and have to say she is dead right on this one!
This only proves that she’s crazy.
Look, I’m an anti-Koster Dem, also. But you don’t fight back against a smarmy fake-Democrat Republican by supporting a real Republican.
Gibbons is just as bad, if not actually worse, than Koster is on the issues that matter to Democrats.
Supporting Gibbons is just a crazy reactionary backlash against Koster. I don’t support either of them. And so, I can live with myself. And my write-in vote for Margaret Donnelly.
WOW, SARAH PALIN and those of her same stripe fits in well with this bunch of Conservative Republicans in Missouri, which are of the SAME STRIPES AS KOSTER.
I know that I could not consciously vote for Koster.
I suggest those Democrats who feel strongly against Koster but cannot not bring themselves to actually cast a vote for a Republican to do as someone suggested months ago on these blogs, A WRITE IN of the candidate that you supported in the primaries to show your disapproval of Koster.
Or, write in, Sponge Bob,(lol), the point is anyone but this man Koster.
She’s not a Super Dem - she’s just Super Dumb.
For her, this is just a finger in the eye of her former primary opponent Tony Condra. He’s a huge Koster supporter - and she’s bitter.
I can’t believe she did this but this is awesome.
This is the kind of thing I want to do but don’t have the guts.
I am not sure but I was going to vote for Gibbons even though I don’t like him at all. I figured that going halfway isn’t the whole way and doesn’t get the job done.
I think I said something like that to my high school girlfriend. I hope it works better tomorrow than it did with my high school girlfriend.
In all honesty, Koster has so many problems that a vote for him is a vote for problems in the party as we move forward.
The one good thing is if Democrats cause Koster to lose, Democrats have a chance of getting a viable candidate in four years.
Voting against Koster is not DUMB but extremely SMART!
If Koster wins, he will always be a sore within the Democratic Party and one which will be hard to rid the Party of, cut out this cancer now before it become too difficult.
Maria is a manic idiot. She has effectively forfeitied the Democratic party’s support of her for the 14th District Senate seat in 2010.
This is political courage at its finest: standing up against someone in your own party when you don’t agree with them. It is, after all, John McCain’s entire platform.
What did Chris Koster do when things got tough? He jumped ship only to quickly align all of his major positions under the Democratic platform. Unfortunately, that doesn’t change the past.
Thanks Maria for voicing the opposition to Chris Koster that so many of us support.
And D, you’re right, Koster will always have a sore spot among many Democratic loyalists.
Yes, standing up to your own party is great. Standing up against Koster is great. I’m all for that. But supporting someone equally bad to do it? Stupid.
Voting for Gibbons b/c you don’t like Koster is wrong. It’s wrong in the same way voting for McCain because you don’t like Obama is wrong. If you recall, fellow Democrats, we all worked hard to keep those Hillary supporters away from McCain. And what was our best argument? McCain doesn’t share your values. It would be a vote rooted entirely in spite and having nothing to do with issues.
If you like Mike Gibbons and his policies that’s one thing, but a vote for spite is childish. If you’re a Democrat who doesn’t like Koster, vote for a write-in — perhaps for Donnelly or Harris, or leave that part of the ballot blank.
Some choice - a Republican in Democratic garb and the Republican who was brought home so that he could cast the vote to overturn mild gun legislation.
As a life-long Democrat I will vote for other.
