Wait, North County!

Voters file into the gym at Twillman Elementary in Spanish Lake

The P-D’s Elizabethe Holland is keeping busy in north St. Louis County. At Jennings City Hall, she spoke with a woman who waited 4 1/2 hours to vote. Now she’s on her way to Velda City where, reports are, that some people have been waiting more than six hours. More on that later.

Now to Jennings. The line snaked around the building into the early afternoon. Most voters told Holland they had waited at least three hours cast ballots.

Voters complained about not having enough voting booths. According to our analysis, Jennings was supposed to get four touchscreens and 15 booths and at least 11 poll workers to handle 2,096 registered voters. (The rates were all below the median, with poll workers at the 15th lowest rate of all 449 county polling places, according to an analysis by the P-D’s Joe Mahr.)

Marilyn Green, 65, said she waited 4 1/2 hours to vote, but you wouldn’t have known it by her disposition.

Said Green: “It’s been wonderful waiting in line because this is history being made, this many black people turning out to vote.”

Qiana Arnold, 32, felt much the same. She started the morning by going to the wrong polling place. She had recently moved and didn’t realize she was in the wrong place until a family member called her. At 12:30 she had been waiting in line for three hours. She wasn’t complaining, though.

“It’s time,” Arnold said. “I always vote but this is a really important election and it motivates you to see everyone else waiting out here.”

Between you and me, St. Louis’ voting lines are getting attention worldwide. I just got a request for a radio interview in Sydney, Australia. They wanted to put me on at 2 CST.

I turned them down down under — I live in north St. Louis County so I need to get to the polls!
