SPRINGFIELD, Ill. - Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich today will conduct his first news conference since his arrest last week on federal corruption charges.

Blagojevich’s office announced this morning he will speak to the media at his Chicago office in the James R. Thompson Center downtown at 2 p.m. CST today. There’s no indication yet of what he’ll say.

Blagojevich was arrested by federal agents Dec. 9 at his Chicago home and charged with crimes that include an alleged plot to auction off for his personal gain the vacant U.S. Senate seat of President-elect Barack Obama

Blagojevich is free on a signature bond as he awaits a January court date. He has ignored widespread calls for his resignation, prompting impeachment proceedings in Springfield. He has spoken only briefly to reporters since the arrest, saying he is anxious to tell his side of the story.

We’ll be updating this throughout the day, of course.

Try this one, Blago:

In all of my years of public life, I have never profited from public service. I earned every cent. And in all of my years of public life, I have never obstructed justice. And I think too that I can say, that in my years of public life, that I welcome this kind of examination, because people have got to know whether their governor is a crook. Well, I am not a crook. I’ve earned everything I’ve got.

If you’d like some help on how to deliver these lines, see this video:

Maybe, Blago was thinking about Nixon during all of this. His thoughts were “If the Governor does it, it is not illegal.”

Gov. Blagojevich -
Since you have a penchant for Rudyard Kipling’s “If”, perhaps you may want to complete your reading, especially the parts about honesty and growing up. Just in case you do not have it at hand:
