Law firm promised tax breaks gives back to Slay
Mayor Francis Slay has bolstered his campaign fund with help from a law firm recently tapped to receive a tax break from City Hall.
Thompson Coburn — which in October was promised a $700,000 incentive package in exchange for keeping its office downtown — gave the mayor’s re-election account $20,000 on Nov. 26, according to filings with the state Ethics Commission.
The venerable law firm — a staple of the St. Louis legal community that included the late former U.S. Sen. Tom Eagleton as a partner — was weighing a move from Seventh Street to Clayton before Slay’s office offered a tax incentive to stay.
Another downtown law firm, Armstrong Teasdale, announced around the same time that they were leaving the city for the county.
Also on Nov. 26, Slay received $25,000 from a fund maintained by organized labor, and $5,000 from FUSE Inc., a downtown advertising firm.

Graft, greed, and corruption. Is there anything else that this can be called?
Not much of a surprise I guess… 2 1/2 hours posted w/o a comment… guess no one in the city cares.
We get the government we deserve. City of St Louis Francis Slay is what you deserve.
Big deal. Do you expect them to give money to Irene Smith? What I’d like to know is, where was the scrutiny of Nixon’s laundered contributions from Ameren that he received while considering whether to prosecute them for the Taum Sauk incident? Perhaps you could file a sunshine request on the AG’s office and look into that one.
The definition of insane is, “Electing the same political party year after year after year and expecting a different result.”
Ladies and gentlemen who reside in the city of St Louis, you elected these morons, now you get to live with the results of your voting. Remember this the next time you vote.
Good thing we have transparency in our campaign financing. Before the reforms, Thompson Coburn would have contributed the same amount, but they would have funnelled it through numerous groups, which makes it difficult to ascertain where the money came from.

Jake, have these attorneys given to Slay in the past? If so then this is a nonstory. Infact, the city did very little in comparison to say, Clayton or St. Louis county to keep a company. the story should be that the county continues to steal the city’s jobs. Thompson Coburn chose to stay downtown and they continue to contribute to politicians. Poor journalism Mr. Wagman.
I wonder how Dr. Suggs, Chris King and co at the American feel about the Franklin brothers of FUSE giving to the mayor.
