Troupe, left, and Slay

As covered in today’s paper, Alderman Charles Quincy Troupe — whose north St. Louis ward has been ravaged by crime — wants law-abiding residents to get concealed weapons permits to protect themselves.

Today, Mayor Francis Slay said he thinks that’s an awful idea — and suggested Troupe’s motive might be more than just public safety.

“His bad idea, which will be on news websites all the country today, coincides with the candidate filing period for his own reelection,” the mayor writes on his website today. “While it is true that Missouri law allows most of its citizens to purchase, possess, and carry handguns, it is also true that some of the most violent crimes in the alderman’s ward are committed by criminals wielding handguns once owned by law-abiding citizens.”

Instead, Slay urges Troupe to encourage his constituents to cooperate with police, or lobby Jefferson City to end state control of the police department.

Meanwhile, Slay offers a reminder for Troupe: Don’t pack heat at work. State law restricts who can bring a concealed gun into a government building.

“I have reminded the public safety director that City Hall is not exempt from the state’s concealed carry regulations,” Slay wrote. “Even for aldermen.”

Quincy has done NOTHING for his ward. Now he tells them to buy guns because of his lack of hardwork or leadership? He is a disgrace to the board of aldermen…and that is saying something! The residents from the 1st ward need to vote him out and elect an Alderman that will actually work hard to rid the ward of criminals and not just tell people to pack heat. Again, Troupe embarrasses St. Louis.

Did anyone else see city Alderidiot Jennifer Florida on You Paid for It? What was with that bizarre comment about Sarah Palin? If she means self-absorbed and uninformed on the issues, then YES, Jennifer, you remind all of us of Sarah Palin.

Troupe just wants his constituents to protect themselves. Is Slay supporting the continuing slaying of innocent people in North St. Louis because he thinks concealed carry won’t work, or because he is racist?

““While it is true that Missouri law allows most of its citizens to purchase, possess, and carry handguns, it is also true that some of the most violent crimes in the alderman’s ward are committed by criminals wielding handguns once owned by law-abiding citizens.””

Mr Mayor, prove it. And if what you say is true, that all these crimes are committed with stolen guns, what is your police force doing about it?

“Instead, Slay urges Troupe to encourage his constituents to cooperate with police, or lobby Jefferson City to end state control of the police department.”

Thats all well and good, but it wont do you a damn bit of good when your getting car jacked. And if the state were to end control of the Police force, what, exactly, would you do then?

This guy Troupe might be an idiot, I know nothing of him. But he is correct about guns.

States with right-to-carry laws have lower overall violent crime rates, compared to states without right-to-carry laws. In states whose laws respect the citizen’s right-to-carry guns for self defense the total violent crime is 13% lower, homicide is 3% lower, robbery is 26% lower and aggravated assault is 7% lower. (Data: Crime in the United States 1996, FBI Uniform Crime Reports)

I generally support Slay, but he’s wrong on this one. In some parts of the city, law abiding citizens live in constant, justified fear. When the cops get there, and you’re lying on the ground dead, it’s too late. Kudos to Troupe for fessing up to the truth: The cops can’t be there to protect you 24×7, but Smith & Wesson can.

I would disagree with the Mayor and ask that people very carefully note what the Alderman asked people to do. The fact that the Mayor is trying to brush aside the Alderman’s suggestion as some means to work itself into a political strategy is unfounded and irresponsible. I do not live in the city of St. Louis, much less spend very much time in the Alderman’s ward. The other portion of the Mayor’s comment is more reasonable. The Mayor should work more closely with the Alderman in order to improve that part of St. Louis. I find it so irritating when a person that is supposed to be a leader (the Mayor) refuses to handle a situation or a statement with more tact, and then they add insult to injury by criticizing a reasonable and lawful suggestion (get a permit, learn how to use a firearm) by saying that the Alderman is trying to be a politician, instead of acknowledging that he has in fact a concern for the condition of his ward.

Troupe is a genius. Please mayer know it all Slay, can you give us statistics on criminals using stolen guns from law abiding citizens? You can’t. You made that up. Maybe you should actually go to North City one time. I doubt you have ever made it past Cole Street. Try walking around up there and tell me you feel safe.

It is a basic fact that the police are tasked with protecting the public at large, not individuals. the only person responsible for your personal is YOU. Chose to defend your life how ever you see fit, I chose a gun and proper training. There is always some bozo out there bringing a knife to a gun fight…
