After dark: Missouri Dems get loose at inaugural ball
WASHINGTON — Missouri Democrats enjoyed a party last night that had been eight years in the making.
With their party finally back in the White House, Barack Obama’s Show-Me supporters — along with friends from 10 other states — donned tuxes and gowns at the Midwestern Inaugural Ball, one of numerous fetes around Washington last night honoring the new commander-in-chief.
Among those spotted at the Midwestern ball where U.S. Sen. Claire McCaskill, talking with Kansas Gov. Kathleen Sebelius. Dr. Sam Page was there with his wife Jennifer, while across the room, Mike and Steve Roberts were holding court with former city comptroller Virvus Jones.
Current city comptroller Darlene Green was there with her chief of staff, Elaine H. Spearman. So, too, was Board of Aldermen President Lewis Reed, and former State Rep. Rodney Hubbard, now working for a national charter schools coalition.
Both of the city’s congressman — U.S. Rep. Russ Carnahan and U.S. Rep. Lacy Clay — were there with their wives, floating in a crowd that included State Auditor Susan Montee, City Dem chair Brian Wahby, and Pulaski Bank president Tom Reeves.
Music was provided by Missourian Sheryl Crow as well as the Fabulous Motown Revue, which, despite its name, is based in Clayton.
But those who stayed late after Crow stop playing got the real treat. Around 11:30 p.m., the president — wearing a white-on-white shirt and bow tie combo –took his new first lady for a dance on the stage.
Greeted to loud cheers, Obama proclaimed, “I love you back. Michelle loves you back.”
