Gov. Matt Blunt, who will leave office on Monday, announced Saturday that he has commuted the sentences of Stacey Lannert and Charity Carey,  who had been convicted of murder.

Lannert killed her father and has been in prison for 18 years, and Carey has been in prison for eight years for murdering her husband.

Blunt said he was acting because both women “were victims of rape and abuse before committing crimes against the men who victimized them.”

“After an exhaustive review of the facts in both cases, I am commuting the sentences of Stacey Lannert and Charity Carey, who suffered extensive abuse before they took action against the men who raped them and subjected them to other horrible physical and emotional abuse,” Blunt said in a statement.

“Stacey Lannert and Charity Carey have paid for their crimes.  In both cases, the abuse these women suffered was clearly a mitigating factor in their actions.  It is my hope and belief that when Ms. Lannert and Ms. Carey are paroled that they will become productive members of society.”

This is very commendable. I wish Blunt would have done more things like this while governor. Most people are unaware of how many women are abused or threatened on a regular basis by controlling or obsessive men. Maybe that quiet woman you work with is solemn for this very reason. Never underestimate the pain felt by emotionally or physically abused women.

This is an awesome move and long over due, hopefully Bush will do the same for Ramos & Compean. I am so happy for this lady as she has served far, far too much time.

Meanwhile, on the news, Bob McCullough was blasting Blunt as being a coward for commuting this sentence as he’s leaving office.

When Bob wakes up one day, perhaps he’ll figure out that is when MOST commutations and pardons are given.

I saw Stacey’s story on the Nancy Grace show some years back and have prayed for her many times since. When I saw this minutes ago I just cried.

I continue to pray also for St.Louis County Prosecutor Bob McCullough for the harden heart he appears to have towards certain people.
