Blagojevich impeachment process postponed
Kevin McDermott
Post-Dispatch Springfield Bureau

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. - The Illinois Legislature’s drive to impeach Gov. Rod Blagojevich has been delayed for a day, as lawmakers await further developments in federal court in Chicago.

The Illinois House impeachment committee, which had been scheduled to meet today, won’t convene until Wednesday (at 3 p.m.), according to an announcement by House Speaker Michael Madigan’s office. The full House, which had been scheduled to convene on Wednesday to possibly consider articles of impeachment, will instead start Thursday.

Blagojevich faces federal corruption charges (including the allegation that he attempted to auction off the U.S. Senate seat of President-elect Barack Obama), and he also faces what appears to be an increasing likelihood of impeachment in Springfield over his alleged crimes and other issues.

A federal judge in Chicago on Monday granted a government motion to release some wiretapped audio to the impeachment committee, but the court is still working out details on exactly what will be released and how.
