The Missouri Constitution Party sent out a statement tonight announcing that it opposes the appointment of Linda Martinez by new Gov. Jay Nixon as director of the Missouri Economic Development Department.

Why?

“While working pro bono for the Bryan Cave Law Firm, Ms Martinez led the fight to repeal duly passed city ordinances in Valley Park…put in place in 2006 to stem the tide of illegal immigrants in the small town,” the Constitution Party said in a statement.

“The ordinances included penalties for any Valley Park business that hired, or any landlord renting to illegal aliens. Ms Martinez coordinated and spearheaded a group of more than twenty lawyers from organizations that included the ACLU, the St. Louis University School of Law, and the Washington University School of Law.”

More:

The Constitution Party believes that her involvement in the case disqualifies Ms Martinez for the position for the following reasons:

–”In leading the opposition against the Valley Park ordinances, Ms Martinez has demonstrated a commitment to supporting illegal immigration over supporting the rule of law.

“Last year, the Missouri legislature passed by an overwhelming majority laws which prohibit employers from hiring illegal aliens. The Constitution Party believes that Ms Martinez’s involvement with the Valley Park case indicates a potential conflict between her stand for illegals and her duties to work within the laws as a state-appointed official.

“As the Director of the Missouri Economic Development Department is directly involved with the Show-Me Jobs program, the Constitution Party believes that Ms Martinez’s appointment will dampen the enthusiasm for and confidence in the program. This would result in loss of commerce and jobs in the state.”

“The Constitution Party calls for the Missouri State Senate to reject the appointment of Ms Martinez, and for Governor Nixon to make a more appropriate choice for the position.

The Valley Park ordinances were not duly passed, they were contrary to state law. Stuff like this is why people make fun of the Constitution Party.

Public services are maxed out due to the economic crises. These illegals don’t pay their full load of taxes and they strap the systems. The also take jobs from Americans. Sure, they’re low paying jobs but it’s a trickle down effect.

Neither the Democratic nor the Republican parties are going to fix what’s wrong with this country. It’s going to take a third party. You have to start somewhere….

So, let’s get this straight: the “Constitution” party is opposing a duly qualified nominee because she fought to overturn a city ordinance which she and many others believed to be UNCONSTITUTIONAL and an infringement on landlords’ freedom?? (A law which was later repealed)

Does the “Constitution” Party now expect all citizens to accept the constitutionality of every state and local law that is passed? Or is this just a pathetic way of getting their name in the news?

The Constitution Party is right … Jay Nixon is wrong. And enough is enough.
We must stop our elected officials from turning away from their duty to enforce the law regarding immigration.

What better way to reduce unemployment in Missouri by letting illegal workers take up jobs. Seems logical to me.

For every “illegal worker” there is an illegal employer. Why are they NEVER the target of criticism?

Another thing, the problem with all the undocumented workers coming from south of the border it goes to show that NAFTA isn’t working. I remember all the hoopla about creating equal trading partners in Canada and Mexico and all NAFTA did was lower the standard of living in Mexico as well as the USA. Shame on the republicans and Bill Clinton for ever signing that terrible agreement.

Hopefully President Obama will look at all trade laws and work to create FAIR trade not just FREE trade.

It has been my pleasure to know Linda Martinez for over 25 years. I’ve enjoyed both a professional and social relationship with Linda and found her to be a pensive and caring person. Her ethics are above reproach. She has a brilliant legal mind. Perhaps the governor is considering her for something more in public service such as a Supreme Court Justice.

The Constitution Party refers to a “duly passed ordinance in Valley Park”; a duly passed ordinance must past muster at to its constitutionality. It is apparent from reading court documents and listening to the arguments that this ordinance did not pass the muster and therefore should be repealed. Only an informed and thoughtful attorney could argue this case to a successful conclusion. Ms. Martinez is both.

If the members of the Constitution Party and those other uninformed commentators were to try and understand the premise of constitutionality perhaps they wouldn’t be showing their ignorance. Instead of making knee jerk comments concerning their uninformed stance.

This is what passes for thought these days among the looney right-wing: a fringe “political party” of conservative extremists files straw man objections. Sigh. Get a grip. The conservative movement these days is intellectually–and morally–bankrupt.

Folk in the Constitution Party remind me of biblical literalists who insist with great vehemence that the King James version is the only “true” version of the Bible. The problem with their understanding is that the King James version is a translation that was done for a specific set of reasons at a specific time in history.

Instead of understanding, literalism merely makes us slaves to one version.
