Eckersley weighs in on court settlement in email case
Scott Eckersley, the former staff lawyer to Gov. Matt Blunt whose firing helped fuel a 15-month controversy over how the governor’s office handles emails, offered up a statement Monday evening in reaction to a court settlement of a legal battle between Blunt and court-appointed lawyers representing an investigative team set up by Attorney General (now Gov.-elect) Jay Nixon.
Eckersley is continuing his own court fight against some current and former members of Blunt’s staff, in which he accuses them of defaming his character and violating the state’s whistleblower statute. Eckersley was fired in late September 2007, right after he advised members of the staff that they may be mishandling emails and not complying with state record-retention laws.
Blunt and his staff have denied any misdeeds, and say Eckersley was fired for unrelated reasons, including doing legal work for his family on state time. Eckersley has disputed their allegations related to his work performance.
In any event, here’s his statement:
“The Sunshine Law was broken and I took a stand. Cowardly people made up cowardly lies to disguise their wrongdoing and in the end it is nice to see that one guy telling the truth is stronger than however many trying to cover it up. I am grateful to every individual who took on this issue and I am grateful to the state for making transparency a priority. “

I always did say that this whole E-Mail investigation was a bunch of crapola. Where is the smoking gun?. Did they find even one E-Mail that indicated that pay to play was going on as in Illinois? Did that find even one E-Mail that indicated corruption?. Is the Governor or any of his aides going to indicted for criminal acts?. This whole uproar was politics as usual being pushed by the P.D. and the Democrats and they owe the people of Missouri an apology for costing the state a lot of money that could have been better spent elsewhere. Shame on them.
