Sources close to Missouri Congressman Roy Blunt tell the Post-Dispatch that Blunt will likely seek the Senate seat being vacated by Sen. Kit Bond in 2010.

Blunt, of Springfield, stepped down as the Minority Whip in the U.S. House earlier this year. At the time he said he was going to spend more energy focusing on Missouri politics.

“Congressman Blunt will take a hard look at that race,” said a source close to the congressman.

Blunt could not be reached for comment.

The race would keep a Blunt in statewide political talk for the next two years. Blunt’s son, Gov. Matt Blunt, chose not to seek reelection.

If Blunt runs, it will set up a major showdown of Missouri political family dynasties, as Secretary of State Robin Carnahan has also been named as a possible candidate.

Now way. The Blunts have spent their capital. He’d be toast. Kinder’s the guy.

Roy Blunt?
We don’t need a Tom Delay/Abramhoff Munchkin from the K-Street Wizard of Oz?
Kinder’s not just the guy…he’s the only Republican left standing.
Kinder doesn’t have the guts to run for higher office. He’s already proved he’s intimidated by real candidates.

I think Roy’s son has tarnished his family’s name so much that no Blunt will ever win a statewide general election in the foreseeable future.

I’ll say it as a known republican on this blog — Blunt needs to run for re-election, and be happy that the people of Southwest Missouri are happy with his service. While I think many of the policies that Matt Blunt put forward were good, his lack of communication and blatant cronyism has tarnished the Blunt name throughout Missouri, and Roy would be making a mistake to try to count on that.

Conversely, I feel the same way about President Bush. Brother Jeb, by far, is the more talented and charismatic of the Bush brothers, but he made the right decision to stay away from running for the U.S. Senate at this time.

I think that in years to come, when the dust settles, people will realize that many of the things Bush and Blunt did were necessary, whether or not they were popular. At that point, I think both names will be redeemed.

But for now — please, Roy — stay in Congress and re-invent yourself as a true fiscal and social conservative, not the spendthrift you showed yourself to be when repubs were kicked out of the majority.

Kinder is a great leader, but I’m not sure he’s the right candidate at this time, either. I would love to see some good fresh blood coming from the Republican Party to hold this senate seat, but is that possible with the current leadership?

As someone who wants to see Robin run and win I will beg Roy Blunt to run.

I use the word Munchkin in a positive way.
