Delmar will also be known as "Obama Blvd"

The Board of Aldermen, as expected, approved a bill this morning that honorarily designates Delmar Boulevard for the new commander-in-chief.

“Barack Obama Boulevard” will run from Downtown to the Loop shopping district. All that’s left is for Mayor Francis Slay to sign the bill, which his office has indicated he will.

The measure passed 23-0. Though there were no objections, some of the board’s 29 members either missed today’s meeting or were not in the room at the time.

The designation is purely ceremonial. As far as the post office is concerned, there will be no “Obama Boulevard.” On maps and other official documents, the name will remain Delmar.

But there will be Obama Blvd. street signs at six intersections on Delmar. The next step for the city is making sure the signs don’t become a target of theft.

“I think that they will be a hot commodity,” said the bill’s lead sponsor, Alderman Kacie Starr Triplett.

I voted for Obama. Is this the best use of the Aldermen’s time…considering the shape of our economy, the number of vacant buildings and level of security felt among city residents? In celebrating the man, shouldn’t we celebrate what he stands for: efficient and effective government with priorities that focus on improving the well being and stability of our country? How many boarded up houses will line the streets of Barak Obama Blvd because of our board’s lack of focus? They should be embarrased by this.

…………………Change you can believe in!….Just another reason to avoid the late-great City of St. Louis….why not just name the whole has-been of a city after him, after all he IS the messiah……St. Barack Missouri

I too voted for Obama, however, the guy hasn’t even been sworn in yet for christsakes! A bit pre-mature, however it does score some cheap headlines for the sponsor of the bill…

Outrageous. I will never refer to Delmar at anything but Delmar. And they wonder why businesses won’t move into the City.

It’s official: Make way for more STL stupidity. Thank you Board of Absurdity.

“Ceremonial” and there will be signs (not that STL can afford it). Steal/tag them — please!!!

I once had such high hopes for Triplett, and this is what she brings to the table. This is the only substantive piece of legislation she has passed. I’ve lost all respect for her.

I too voted for Obama. This just proves St. Louis City is as backwater as the rest of the country believes them to be. Seriously, most towns generally wait until after someone does something of note prior to honoring them. Now I understand why St. Louis County and St. Louis City are separate entities. Way to go St. Louis City! Keep that high murder rate, multiple STD, backwater bumpkin reputation shining bright.

What next, are the Alderman and Mayor going to name streets after themselves as well? They have after all, managed to get elected so are as deserving. Perhaps the time, effort, and money involved in this could have been better spent. Perhaps on a coat of paint for City Hall, or maybe a teacher or two.

Then again, what can you expect from a group of people who allow one of their own to piss in a trash can.

Stay classy STL.
