The House and Senate galleries in the Capitol are full of family and friends of elected representatives today, as the people’s business begins with ceremonial swearings-in and opening day speeches.

In the House, Secretary of State Robin Carnahan kicked off the proceedings with a speech urging lawmakers of both parties to work together.

“It’s our job to make government work,” she said. “Hear those words: ‘Make government work.’”

The opening of the session is likely to see less partisan conflict than many others, with new leaders (Ron Richard, Charlie Shields and Jay Nixon) who so far, at least, have pledged to work together to get Missouri out of its economic doldrums.
