State Rep. Jamilah Nasheed, one of a handful of Muslim state legislators in the U.S., has issued a statement condemning America’s reaction to the Israel’s recent missile attacks on Gaza.

“The recent Israeli aggression is both unwarranted and completely disproportionate,” Nasheed said last week. “The United States’ wholehearted support for the massacre of innocent civilians in the Gaza Strip is unconscionable and undermines our reputation abroad. So long as America continues to act as an inherently biased player, we will never provide the just leadership that is needed to bring peace to Palestine and the rest of the world.”

More than 400 individuals have been killed in the air strikes targeting the Palestinian group Hamas, which Israel considers a terrorist organization.

Nasheed, elected to her second term in November, is one of two Muslim lawmakers in Jefferson City. T.D.  El-Amin, who is also Muslim, represents the district adjoining Nasheed’s in St. Louis.

Tomorrow morning, a group of bi-partisan officials led by Lt. Gov. Peter Kinder are expected to gather at the Jewish Federation’s St. Louis headquarters to show solidarty with Israel.

I forget… who violated the cease-fire agreement?

If I’m not an expert on Middle East relations, but if I’m not mistaken the mortar fire and rockets are from guerilla units and not a strategic effort on the armed forces part in Gaza. Now Israel has launched air-strikes and a ground offensive in the Gaza Strip. I can almost guarantee that Israel’s efforts serve to only embolden more ‘terrorist’ to engage in hostile activity. I do understand the need for Israel to protect its people, but their efforts are a VERY extreme and not appropriate if you ask me. I think the US would be better served by saying they dont condone the rocket and mortar fire coming from Gaza, but we also this that Israel should restrain itself from using such brute force and killing innocent people in the process.

American slaves were counted as 3/5 of a person - that’s 3/5 more humanity than Islamic extremists would assign to Israeli Jews. If world affairs were governed by anti-Semites like Nasheed, Israel would long ago have been wiped from the face of the earth.

The group in power in Gaza is Hamas. They have sworn to wipe out Israel and all the Jews in it. Israel has had thousands of rockets fired at them in the past 5 years resulting in death, wounds, and destruction of houses. The “proportionate” response would be to fire rockets indiscriminately at Gazan population centers like Hamas does to Israel. Israel is careful to target the military, which doubly defies international law, first by firing at civilian targets, and second, by using civilians as human shields.

Jamilah is NOT anti-semitic, its talk like that that adds fuel to the fire. She is a concerned Muslim. As for Hamas being in power, one can look at US and Israel to blame for that, we were so hell bent on overthrowing a dictatorship (which we accomplished), but instead of the puppet government we thought we could put in place, the elcections were won by Hamas. If the US had handled this problem correctly from that point and recognized Hamas, I’m sure things would not be as bad as they are now.

The majority of Gazans are not extremist either, they are moderate, just as the majority of Iranians are. But people would rather listen to propoganda and rhetoric than to do research for themselves.

I’m not a sympathizer of either side, but we have to call a spade a spade.

One has to wonder if people were lobbing mortars etc into Nasheed’s house if she would be convinced that she was the aggessor?

If you’re defining “proportional” as tit-for-tat, Israel should have declared that Palestinian control of Gaza should be wiped out and not done much about it aside from lobbing a few rockets at Gaza, killing fewer in a year than Israel has killed in a day of the current round of attacks. Instead, they’ve given Hamas exactly what they want and allowed themselves to be provoked into a disproportionate response, which engenders sympathy around the world for the Palestinians and contempt for the Israeli actions.

As for the claim that Israelis are targeting only military targets, that might even be true (although they are using weapons like cluster bombs that are not the kind of weapons that single out military targets while leaving neigboring civilian residences untouched) but the fact remains that they have killed more civilians since the Gaza offensive began than Hamas has managed in all of 2008.

I’m not excusing Hamas here, either. They should cease firing rockets and mortars into Israel.

Who the hell fights a way under “disproportionate” rules? NO ONE!
Hamas shot 75 members of Fatah to keep them from working with Israel, was that in proportion?

If you pick a fight with a bigger, stronger, better opponent, prepare to get your butt handed to you, not hit only as hard as you hit them.

There will NEVER be peace between Israel and Hamas; NEVER! Hamas has NO intention of EVER abiding by a peace treaty. They will simply use it to re-arm, the same way they have done every time in the past. Hamas is a cancer that must be destroyed, not contained. In the destruction, some others get killed. In the end, the innocent palestianians will be better off with Hamas destroyed.

This is all England’s fault for creating Israel in the first place. Just bomb the entire region off the face of the earth so these religions can quit fighting over it and be done with it. Give them 30 days to evacuate and then destroy it.

There see? Now they are all on the same side–mad at me.

Amazing. You expect such wacky spin from Islamofacists but I though Jamiliah wasactually sane. Let’s review: Israel unilaterally withdrawls from Gaza as an amazing goodwill gesture. The islamists put Hamas into power and then suffer over 6000 missiles as a thank you gift. Meanwhile the gazites teach their schoolchildren that Jews are pigs and they and Israel have no right to exist. Jamiliah chooses to stand with the muslims calling the Israelites the aggressors. Wow!
