Nixon taps St. Louis lawyer to lead economic development
Gov.-elect Jay Nixon has tapped a St. Louis lawyer with a long record of working alongside business to lead the state’s Department of Economic Development.
Linda Martinez, will be charged with leading Nixon’s Show Me JOBS program, the new governor’s push to revive the state’s sluggish economy.
Martinez, 54, lives in the city’s Washington Avenue Loft District and is currently a partner in the high-powered Bryan Cave law firm downtown, where she has focused on public-private development partnerships.
She is a well-known figure at City Hall, where she has represented, among others, Washington University and BJC Health Care.
Now, Martinez will be on the other side of the bargaining table as Nixon’s top aide on economic development.
At a news conference at a small business in the Delmar Loop — City Sprouts, which sells kids clothing — Nixon said Martinez is “as qualified as anyone in the Midwest to hold this position.”
“Linda knows the economic development system inside and out, ” Nixon said.
Her office, Martinez said, will “move at the speed of business” and will take “bold steps to create good-paying jobs”
“Creating jobs will be the priority of the economic development department,” Martinez said.

This choice is absurd. This woman was the lead pro-bono attorney in the Valley Park illegal alien controversy. For those that don’t know that means she fought for the rights of illegal aliens and the “right” to take lawful American jobs from lawful Americans. This is clearly a bad sign of things to come from this administration and for the state of Missouri. Extremely bad choice for Missouri.
> Do we know if she contributed money to his campaign?
Martinez contributed $1,000 to Nixon’s campaign, $250 to Robin Carnahan, $500 to Margaret Donnelly, $200 to Rachel Storch, and $650 to Frank Plescia (a Republican who lost in the 82nd district).
More broadly, the Bryan Cave law firm is a gold mine for political candidates, yielding nearly 500 contributions totalling nearly $186,000. Hulshof got 43 contributions, $29,668. Nixon got 89 contributions, $33,175.
The actual dispute regarding this ligation is simply this: the City of Valley Park’s Board of Aldermen’s and the previous mayor’s attempts to pass city ordinances that would have placed unrealistic demands upon the city’s business owners, employers and landlords by requiring them to perform vetting processes that even our Federal government’s ICE can not do correctly and in a timely fashion. A second point is that the legal authority to legislate, regulate and administer the immgration laws of our nation is reserved strictly for our federal government; refer to our constitution for verification. What this means is that no lower governmental entity has any authority or legal obligation in setting immigration law and policy.
Ms. Martinez and the rest of the legal team acted on behalf of and as the legal team representating the business owners, employers and landlords. They did not in any way represent the interests of illegal immigrants directly or indirectly.
I understand how those who did not deeply research this matter may have been persuaded that the issue was the defense of illegal immigrants’ rights because of the incomplete and inadequate coverage by the various media. It is difficult to get all the necessary details from a 200 word newspaper article or a 30 second soundbite on local television stations.
Take the time to do the research before making statements that are simply not valid or informed.
Start your research by:
1. Finding out how many illegal immigrants were recorded as plainfiffs or defendants in the various lawsuits.
2. Getting copies of ALL the city ordinances that were written, approved and in dispute in the litigation.
3. Finding out how many illegal immigrants actually live and/or work in the City of Valley Park from then start of the issue in 2006 to present day.
4. Obtaining a copy of the legal pleadings that detail the issues in question and that are being litigated.
5. Obtaining a copy of the final decisions of those lawsuits that have been concluded.
6. Asking for a summary of exactly what the $273,000+ spent by the City of Valley Park accomplished for the City and its residents, business owners, employers and other stakeholders.
This will give you a solid foundation to develop informed insights and opinions. The other option is for you not to do any of this and fall back on what appears to be the tactic of choice among those who are not informed or wish to remain uninformed: FUD - Fear Uncertainty Doubt.
Relying upon this tactic resulted in the previous mayor losing his 2008 re-election by a margin of 2 to 1 to our new mayor. The majority of our City’s voters saw through the misrepresentions and spoke quite clearly at the ballot box.
Wow, what a bunch of kiss ass dribble posted in this blog. This woman actively campaigns pro-bono against jobs for Missourians and yet no one makes reference to it. I see mostly comments posted by what appear to be people on her payroll.
