Open Comment, pre-inaugural edition

Special to the Post-Dispatch

It’s Sunday afternoon, and all Political Fix regulars know what that means:

Sound off!

As of noon tomorrow, Gov-elect Jay Nixon will drop the ”elect” — as will several other about-to-be statewide officeholders. And in nine days, the same will be true for Illinois’ former senator, President-elect Barack Obama.

With today and tomorrow’s forecast calling for frosty temps in Missouri, what better way to warm up than to let off some steam.

Our Open Comment line is now open!

All topics, politicians and events are on the table.

Just remember our rules: Keep it clean, keep it civil and keep it focused on regional and local issues, or perspectives. (Yes, I am taking “Centrist’s” observation to heart, about our inclusion of DC Download on our site. But Download was primarily about the D.C. activities of Mo and Ill pols, so keep that in mind.)

Let ‘er rip!!

A City official visited Herbie’s Vintage 72 to ask questions about the air filtration system. I take that as a sign, along with the mention of air handling technology by Mayor Slay in his blog this week, that City Hall is looking for an alternative to a smoking ban for St. Louis City.

More Lies That you Can Believe In!

The media far from ‘taking him (Obama)down’ are making his excuses for him… and doing it before he screws you over

http://www.newsweek.com/id/178855/page/1 Newsweek’s turn…

“Dick Cheney, who will step down as vice president on Jan. 20, has been widely portrayed as a creature of the dark side, a monstrous figure who trampled on the Constitution to wage war against all foes, real and imagined. Barack Obama was elected partly to cleanse the temple of the Bush-Cheney stain, and in his campaign speeches he promised to reverse Cheney’s efforts to seize power for the White House in the war on terror.

Now Obama must decide: Will he enrage many of his supporters by adopting Bush’s claim of sweeping power to grab legal residents—and perhaps even citizens—and jail them forever? Or will he let a possibly very dangerous man go, and thereby concede that any Qaeda terrorist who can get into the United States legally is free to roam the country unless (and until) he commits a crime or maybe an immigration violation?

Both options would be political nightmares. It might be better for Obama to moot the case by using forceful diplomacy, and even financial incentives, to get Qatar or some other country to take al-Marri, treat him gently and keep him locked up. The Bush administration may have already secretly tried this; Obama could try harder.”

But wait!

Isn’t that ‘rendition’!?! one of the most vile and heinous thing we can do to someone?

To re-cap for those of you folks with detail trouble…

The left (Democrats, the ACLU, and others) have been screaming like British football fans that Bush and Cheney ‘wiped themselves using the Constitution.’

Obama… and many (most? All?) Democrats running against any Republican (right down to city council level) made the same claim as well… and as these two clowns in Newsweek claim “Barack Obama was elected partly to cleanse the temple of the Bush-Cheney stain,”

Now we the press are telling you that likely he won’t… and we are telling you that hey! It’s ok… because The One must make ‘tough choices’ as President… (but Bush didn’t oh, no he and Cheney were just evil… EVIL I TELL YOU!)

Well guess who is about to stick you civil libertarians in the …?

Enjoy…

Change you CAN’T believe in

“E-Mail Farce”
The Post-Dispatch and the Democrats have set up a fine “Potemkin Village” house for us to tour and they furnished it with smoke and mirrors. They let you in the front door and let your tour all of the rooms, it is only after you are ushered out the back door that you realize that you have been scammed. There is nothing there of any substance, it is all an illusion.

Kenrick - Funny how, all through that scandal about Nixon receiving donations from Ameren while considering the Taum Sauk prosecution, they never bother to read HIS emails. I’m sure they’ll forget all about this sunshine hoo ha now that Nixon is “dropping the ‘elect’”.

Please, let’s just get a ruling on Obama’s eligibility. Someone has to be the enforcer of the job requirements, and that person needs to publish an official US Government statement that Obama is eligible to take office. If there is no such person, and there is a reasonable doubt of his eligibility (which there is — unless you discount an eye witness account from a direct family member of his birth in Kenya).

Does anyone realize what will happen if this lingers past inauguration and he is later found to be ineligible? I know the Dems and the PD want to brush this under the rug, but you would think they could at least take an honest look at the issue.

What do you think Jo?

Ooops, published a sentence fragment. To close off that first paragraph, if there is reasonable doubt, then the issue should be investigated and allowed to be brought to closure.

Well, since Mr. Obama is going to be the president-select of the people of Missouri whether or not he is eligible, I’ll have to take my chances of getting the boot here because there is no other place to open comment on Mr. Obama.

I did not vote for Mr. Obama for several reasons, but I am happy for him and his supporters and am excited about the first bi-racial president of African decent. I think it is a very progressive statement for our country. I am also grateful that the GOP dodged a bullet in McCain not being elected. However, until the Governor of Hawaii releases his real birth certificate which is currently under lock down, I will be as respectful of Mr. Obama as the Democrats and the press were of President Bush for 8 years. And I will be refering to him as “H” for short.

Look ma, no brains! You yappers can’t get over it, McCain lost! Obama will be our next President, despite all your ignorant yapping about birth certificates, etc.

I guess if my criteria for any legitimacy of a Bush Presidency were Bush’s willingness to resign in disgrace, admit all wrongdoing and spend the rest of his life in jail or he’s not a real American, you yappers might think me ignorant too. I’m just glad Bush’s going, and will soon be gone!

I am interested in the position of Grand High Inquisitor for the US, and will mete out justice and fairness with the compassionate conservatism of Bush, Cheney, Ashcroft, Rumsfeld, Gonzo, Feith, Mukasey, Wolfowitz, and Perle, among others. Please Mr. Obama, consider me for this position in your administration.

Obama was the best choice for many reasons. However, I am losing hope that he will be able to rein in our military:

Obama: “Iran is going to be one of our biggest challenges and as I said during the campaign we have a situation in which not only is Iran exporting terrorism through Hamas, through Hezbollah, but they are pursuing a nuclear weapon that could potentially trigger a nuclear arms race.”

2007 National Intelligence Estimate on Iran, the consensus opinion of all 16 U.S. intelligence agencies: “We judge with high confidence that in the fall of 2003, Tehran halted its nuclear weapons program.”

mlgb - You are citing a report from more than a year ago. In fact, it is a widely known fact that Iran has an underground uranium enrichment facility. They claim it is only for peaceful use, but refuse to allow UN inspections to verify this. And, as the Washington Post reports today, Iran is actively pursuing bomb parts on the black market. Perhaps Mr. Obama can follow the dots better than you can.
