Steelman: A Palin with more economic know-how?
In a Politico story assessing the U.S. Senate seats up for grab in 2010, one GOP operative gave a novel take on former State Treasurer Sarah Steelman.
“She’s Sarah Palin with an economics degree,” the anonymous Republican said.
Fair comparison?
While both have taken on the party machinery in their home states, beyond that the analogy feels superficial.
It is true, though, that Steelman does have an economics degree — a masters, in fact, from Mizzou.
Steelman, who frayed ties in her party with a bitter and unsuccessful primary for governor last year, is on the short list of potential GOP candidates who could run to replace Kit Bond in two years.
The Politico calls Steelman an “intriguing prospective candidate. An outspoken critic of the GOP establishment, she ran a reform-centered campaign for governor last year and has a record of taking on her own party over earmarks and lavish pensions for legislators.”
Put that way, Steelman sounds more like a Republican version of U.S. Sen. Claire McCaskill, who challenged a sitting governor in her own party and, later, rode her record as state auditor to Capitol Hill.

Not even the same ball game. State treasurer not even close to a very popular sitting gov. Can we get some real political coverage? H Clinton not answering questions about Billy’s donations, Treasurey nominee tax evasion (until he found out he was going to be nominated), flip flopping on Illinois senate seat from BHO and Dem Senators because a general election may very well yield a Republican Senator, etc…….
Oh yeah, the $150,000,000 BHO tab for the inaugural on Tuesday. President Bush’s cost a third of that and he got blasted from the Liberal Media. Where are they now????????
> a very popular sitting gov
budb1969 - I’m not sticking up for Steelman one bit … but the sitting gov we’re talking about here is B. Holden. I’ve never hear anyone use “very popular” in connection with him.
What I want to know is, when is the Steelman campaign going to quit using that old glamor shot and get a current photo out to the media?
This looks like another article, not having anything to do with Sarah Palin, but her name is inserted into so that Google Alerts will pick it up, and it will get read by more than the handful of people it would have otherwise. I’ve seen this as a developing trend.
How about a story on 0bama’s plan to create a vast campaign style network that he would use to bully members of congress into voting for his programs, rather than this kind of unimportant stuff.
See the LA Times story here: http://www.latimes.com/news/nationworld/washingtondc/la-na-obama-army14-2009jan14,0,2211031.story
Nick,
I was referring the comparrison to Gov Palin. Sorry for the confusion. I I was trying to compare the two college degrees and how they relate to Steelman over Palin. IMHO, they don’t. A degree is a piece of paper unless one does something with it.
Greg,
oooooh, that scary Obama is trying to create a system where people contact their congressmen about issues they care about??? oh noes!! Republicans are hilarious.
Trying to imagine Palin with an economics degree is like trying to imagine a round square.

So, do you have an easier time imagining tax cheat Tim Geithner having an MA in international economics from Johns Hopkins and serving as chairman of the New York fed and nominated for treasury secretary?

Actually Adam Obama trying to create a system where people contact their congressmen about issues they care about would be re-inventing the wheel, and another example of forward thinking liberals coming up with great ideas like Al Gore inventing the internet!
Newsflash for Adam and Obama, National Write Your Congressman has been helping informed Americans voice their opinions to elected officials since 1958. This is hardly a new creation by Obama, or anyone for that matter.

A good example of yet another “well informed” liberal.
Educate yourselves people! Then consider voting.
Sarah Steelman is an excellent choice for Senate - she is a true independent that gets votes from the right, and the independents. She would be unbeatable in a general election, if she can just get past the Missouri GOP which wronged her last time when she ran against Hulshof.
Joe,
Sarah Steelman is done in the state GOP…never has a ‘loser’ in a gubernatorial race been such a ’sore’ loser. Never even gave Hulshof a superficial endorsement for his candidacy after the primary. She was asked over a dozen times to appear with Kenny at campaign events, she always had something else to do (’got to take my son to football practice’), and then lies to reporters saying she never had been asked to do any campaigning for Kenny. She should be ashamed of the lies. She would be much better off taking her trial lawyers friends and joining Koster as a Dem.
