Talent, Loudon interested in running for Bond’s seat?
St. Louis Post-Dispatch
Word is that former Republican State Sen. John Loudon of Chesterfield, who lost a bid for state auditor in the 2006 primary, is interested in running for the U.S. Senate seat being vacated by Kit Bond.
Loudon, a social conservative, would appeal to the state’s evangelical base, though may have trouble muscling out party heavyweights like Roy Blunt and Peter Kinder.
Speaking of party heavyweights: Politico reports that former U.S. Sen. Jim Talent — who lost his own seat in 2006 to Claire McCaskill — may try a return to Capitol Hill.

Why won’t the Post Dispatch do it’s job? 41 cents share price huh, wonder why?!

Loudon? Give me a break. . Loudon crossed the line when he tried to give his wife his old job. End political royalty (and neopotism) in America, NOW!
Please God, the last thing we need to do in the most severe economic crisis since the great depression is to elect a pandering phoney like John Loudon to the U.S. Senate. With the country pushing 10% unemployment all this fool would do is try to enact more sex offender laws. I’ve never seen a politician so obsessed on one issue. The sad thing is that his obsession is with airtime on TV and the radio not really protecting kids.
Loudon for senate? As a democrat, one can only hope that bozo gets the nomination. Many repubs I know would be shamed and stay home election day.
Loudon will set the minimum wage at $3.50 while busting every union in America.
Hasn’t the middle-class suffered enough?
Republicans need somebody who can clear the field, so there will be no primary. Talent tops that list. The only other candidate who comes close is Kinder. But if Kinder is the party’s guy, you’ll probably see Steelman jump in.
I heard that Chris Koster might switch parties again to jump in this republican primary.
PS - I’ve known Loudon for years, and he’s no bozo. He’s one of my favorite elected officials, in fact. But I will guarantee you that he won’t run against Talent or Kinder.
Regardless of who (or is it whom) the Republicans put up against most likely Robin Carnahan for the Democrats. They will need to have about 100 million dollars to spend in order to make it close. The Republican candidate will need to work harder becuse their strength is scattered throughout the rural areas of Missouri. Even some of those Republican leaning voters are not about to contribute money, because many of them are broke and unemployed. 2010 may be an election year when enough economically challenged Republican cheerleaders finally realize that a vote for gun rights and so-called right to life candidates will not keep food on the table or a roof over their heads.
Jim Talent would be a fantastic choice. I hope he runs!
With all due respect to my friend “ibentrudaropes” the truth is, Loudon killed the fun for you and me both because he got done, the toughest predator laws in the country. He aint getting Devlin’s vote either.
But the funny thing is, he spent a lot more time doing workmens comp. laws which I DO like because he has saved my business a ton of money off my rates. It made it easy to hire people before this economic mess started. So, say what you want, he does get things done. I like Talent, but he’s kind of yesterdays news. Kinder, I don’t really know about.
Osama John Loudon? The right wing terrorist? He ran a crappy race for Auditor. Lost to a real loser. The he runs his wife for his seat and hiding the fact on his signs that it’s her, she loses. I hope he runs. He can’t seem to run a winning race lately. He goes after the unions, that’s a loser too. I’m sure he will make the other Repub’s spend $$$$ & lose again in the primary!!! Go John GO!!
Looks like Loudon won’t have the predators or the union votes. That adds up to like what, about 8% of the electorate. Mostly democrats. Oh, and a hack or two.
Either Jim Talent or John Loudon would do an excellent job.
They both have a long and proven record of fiscal conservatism. With the current economic recession, Missourians are going to want to send someone to Washington who they can completely trust to use their money carefully.
Party heavyweights are just that - party heavyweights. I imagine that they’ll be handed the race, but that doesn’t mean that we the people shouldn’t stand up and ask that we get past party politics and look at the heart of the issue. Who would really vote against bailouts in D.C.? Who would really care about what the people of Missouri needed, even if it wasn’t popular with those who write campaign checks?
I’d love to see a candidate of substance and personal integrity (how about John Loudon?) trump the candidates of power and money in this race.
Come to think of it, both Jim Talent and John Loudon have statewide grassroots followings. Roy Blunt would have to build his…
If Loudon wants to run, more power to him. The statewide MO Republican Party really needs some fresh faces and some new energy, which is what Loudon would provide. He was one of the most active legislators throughout his tenure in Jeff City, and would be a very effective, hard-working Senator. It may be smarter for Repubs to go that direction instead of trotting out another establishment candidate like Talent or Blunt.
Also if you think Loudon is a one-issue guy who does nothing but go after sexual predators (what a horrible thing to do by the way…make MO safer for children by having some of the toughest predator laws in the country), then the extent of your MO political knowledge comes from reading the “political fix” and talking to democratic hacks. Just look at the facts, look at his legislative record, and you will see that he took the lead on numerous issues during his tenure in the house and senate. You may disagree with all his positions and think he would be bad for MO but to call him a one-trick pony just shows your ignorance and disregard for facts.
Secondly, to the crack about nepotism…so someone encouraging or supporting a spouse or relative to seek office disqualifies that person from seeking future office? That’s idiotic…and you obviously don’t pay much attention to politics. Do you have a problem with Steelman? Emerson? Carnahan? Blunt? Should anyone with those last names never run for anything b/c they previously had a spouse or relative involved in politics?
As a conservative, I can only hope that the MO GOP has enough sense to nominate a solid, fiscal conservative (like Loudon) who will look out for the interests of small business and families.
I’d be thrilled to vote for John Loudon for US Senate. He has the kind of integrity our government needs.
Yes, as the matter of fact I do have a problem with Carnahan, Emerson, Blunt, et. al. If you don’t, that is idiotic. End political royalty in America NOW!
and Clay, too.
I’ve met John Loudon and supported some of his legislation when he was in state politics. I think he is an excellent choice, and I would definitely vote for him.
You have to forgive jjk. He got this thing about political legacies. It pretty much started when he was young and his mother tried to eat him. That and his real name being Josiah Jeremiah Kaltenbringensteinbelcher.
Loudon? He was the only State Senator to oppose the SLAPP suit bill, which aimed to further rein in evil corporations who sue the public to shut them up about development projects.
John Loudon is just what we need in the U.S. Senate. His integrity is paramount, his committment is unwaverring, he comes up with fresh solutions, and his stance on the issues is appealing to both social and fiscal conservatives. John Loudon is the right person for the job.
Oh, and John Loudon doesn’t carry baggage or skeletons in the closet. He’s been known to be one of the most “squeaky clean” people in the Capitol.
Let’s have a senator who we can feel good about all the way around.
Kinder isnt running, because he is a yes man who does what he is told. They told himto get out the governor’s race………he jumped out in less than a day. Talk about doing an aboutface! Not to mention that he owes baby Blunt something to the tune of 300K for a loan, it would be quite embarassing for Kinder to have that loan called in and his campaign committeee go bankrupt.
Now back to the actual field and not the bench. You have Steelman, who I would love to see run, because we all know she has little chance, but she would raise a ton of cash and go negative from day 1. Then you have Talent, another guy I would love to see run, he just lost, he is a Washington insider, he is closely aligned to Bush and a total aloof. Roy Blunt, another Washington insider I ‘d love to see in a crowded primay. The Blunt name is Missouri is damaged goods, need I go further…….he couldnt even beat a crook (Bill Webster). John Loudon, that just be gasoline for the fire.
John Loudon is one of those rare politicians who is also a real person. As one of his constituents, I always found him extremely approachable and truly sympathetic to my concerns. His creative solutions would be a real asset to MO in the US Senate. He would have my vote for sure.
Barb, are you silly? I think that if you check the record Loudon WROTE the SLAPP bill. No one has brought that issue up in years. I may be wrong, but I am pretty sure Loudon passed it. Yeah, I googled “Loudon slapp” http://www.casp.net/statutes/statemo.html Barb, check your facts.
Jim,
You want to criticize me, have at it. You want to talk about my mother that is another issue. I have no problem with political legacies. I have a problem with political royalty and the professional poliitical class. If you don’t, you are probably part of it. Get a real job, Jim. How big is your trust fund, Jim? Did your daddy give you that corvette at 16? Did he make you Vice President of the Commerce Bank of Beverly Hills when you graduated from his alma mater (barely)? You want to recycle the same lineage of hacks, you deserve it. I’m for bringing in new, fresh, qualified blood.
John Loudon is exactly the kind of man Missouri needs in the Senate. He is willing to fight for what is right and he has shown a dedication to moral principals that is so rare among politicians. He’s too good for Washington, but if he runs, I’m sure it won’t be on just one issue, and he will have a grassroots army ready to go to work for him. Hmmm, did you guys forget that more Missouri voters cast their ballots for McCain than Obama? We like conservatives.
Mr. jjk,
Respectfully my good man, I think you are mistaken about the young master Loudon. I cannot verify any serious pedigree in him, no political lineage predating his election in his bloodline. I would say your objection to his candidacy based on some claim to royalty would be, how shall I say it, unbefitting.
As for you, your sad protestations make me ever so slightly misty. Tears would be unbecoming, so please settle for just misty. Tata
Loudon doesn’t have a shot in hades to land the GOP nomination, and everyone but John knows it. He has the ego of a U.S. Senator, but the talent of a dog catcher.
John Loudon is a man of deep integrity, a true fiscal and social conservative, and is a fresh breeze that’s desperately needed in the GOP. His creativity and willingness to stand for what he believes no matter what the cost are priceless.
Loudon would be an excellent choice for U.S. Senate. It’s about time we sent a real conservative to Washington, who will fight for traditional, hard working, Missouri values.
His reputation as a fiscal watchdog, a tenacious legislature, a protector of the innocent and a family man with solid integrity would make him a excellent candidate.
He has my vote!
That would be a tenacious legislator.
Loudon is a nice guy but really not smart enough to be a US senator. Talent (and his wife Brenda, who calls most of the shots), while smart, is a has-been who is all about himself and commands no loyalty anymore. Roy Blunt has good instincts, but a long record Carnahan would exploit; plus the Blunt name (like the Bush name) is too tarnished thanks to Matt. Steelman is short on the IQ scale and everyone knows trial lawyer husband David pulls those strings. The pro-life folks would not help Kinder, handing the seat to Carnahan. The last (and best) person standing is Kenny Hulshof, who has more smarts, values and integrity than all of the previously named.
All the “overflowing” praises for Louden, Talent and even Hulshof are most likely moot. The chances of replacing Bond with any of the above conservatives, with Robin Carnahan most likely to run, are more than highly unlikely. Bond was able to cross boundries - reach bi-partisan agreements and remain amicable within the Republican fold. All of the three aforementioned are quite conservative and even though Missouri voters *barely* went Red in the presidential election, it’s quite doubtful they would choose a staunch, conservative U.S. Senator in 2010. So, discuss as you wish, which of these three Republicans you’d vote for - none of them would come close to being the right one to put up against Carnahan. And, frankly, I don’t know who would be. Truthfully, I don’t know that there is one in Missouri right now who could beat her. Just my opinion, of course.
Loudon’s another phony who cloaks himself in religious morality while bullying through his agenda. His sex offender legislation was not about protecting children, but about controlling a segment of society that he wants to apply to other disfavored groups. To that end he ignored protestations from prosecutors and the Highway Patrol. He craves power, the kind he had in Jeff City.
Talent has his own problems. He lost the Senate seat because he put politics over people, and those people haven’t forgotten. He’s not as clean as his rep, but not as dirty as Bond.
morehouse’ innuendo seems silly. Talent is as clean as they come. His biggest problem is his failure to close the deal in his last two races. I just don’t think he excites people. I am curious about the emotional shots at Loudon over unions, predators and even slapp laws, the latter two baseless. What do you mean he passed the predator laws over the objections of law enforcement? I thought they were singing his praises. I would advise you get some counseling about your Loudon hatred or at least come up with some serious material.
@icst
Ask the Committee staffers about the faxes they were getting from the Highway Patrol. Oh wait, that’s not public info and don’t repeat what I just said. Ask the Committee staffers whether the Legislature listens to any advice they get from knowledgable third parties. Oh wait, that’s just between you and me.
You should know the public personna of politics is not the reality, and it’s not limited to Loudon or the Republicans. The real story is deep inside with the grunts who do most of the work and filtering. On the record, off the record.
As for Talent, it leans more towards re-action instead of action, but the result is the same; putting politics ahead of citizens.
First off, I am sick and tired of the sick incestuous nature of politics. Just because you have a certain last name there is this sense of entitlement carried by such families as Carnahan, Bush, Blunt, Clay, Kennedy, et al…………… It even goes to Loudon with his wife running in the last primary.
Is it not time to bring out new blood and new names into the picture? Are there no Mayors or local elected officials who have the knowledge, education, commitment and background to run for office in D.C.? Why do we have to run on the “old guard?” I say push out the old names and create new opportunities with new leaders.
“Professional Politicians” do not have all the answers. See Rod Blagojevich as an example. Just because your daddy was this or your grand daddy was that IS NOT QUALIFICATION for public office. DO you think Lacy Clay is competent? IF you do then you do need your head examined. Was Jean Carnahan qualified, and literate enough, for the senate? I think not.
Let’s look for someone at the local level that KNOWS THE PEOPLE! You cannont convince me that Robin Carnahan, Jim Talent, John Loudon or any of the other “chosen ones” have ANY clue about the needs of people at the local level. They rely on 20-somthing staffers to get them the information. We need a workhorse in the U.S. Senate you can check in with the people on Meet The Press and check out with the folks at Wal-Mart!
FYI morehouse you might want to look at the bill its self and check your facts. I did and if you want I will post a real copy of the bill and so you can see Loudon is the farthest thing from a sleazy Politician!!!! I used to think like you but then I checked it out for my self and found out differently.
@Ann Thanks but I know where to find the bill. I also know where to find the staffers that provided the info. I used to trust like you but then I started doing my own research.
morehouse I lobby at the Capitol and know what goes on up there. And I know Loudon is a EXTREME man of integrity! You are always talking about staffers are you a staffer at the capitol???(Just wondering)
I wonder how many profiles John Loudon can create on STL Today? It seems like there are about 20 on this comment section alone. I’ve just come to the conclusion that John Loudon has a curiously symbiotic relationship to Al Sharpton. When anyone criticizes Al they are immediately labled “RACIST”. When anyone criticizes Johnny Loudon they are immediately labeled “PREDATOR”. If you believe in reincarnation I think we’d be able to trace Johnny’s lineage right back to Salem, where he was burning his critics back then for being “Witches”.
I wonder how many comments are from Chuck Graham and he just uses different user names?????
