Talking about prejudice on the road to inauguration
St. Louis Post-Dispatch
Beginning a two hour journey to Washington from their Virginia hotel, St. Louisans riding on two buses were asked to offer their thoughts on why they decided to make the trip for the inauguration of Barack Obama.
Mamie Payton, 60, returned to her seat after talking about growing up with prejudice in the 1960s and 70s in Meredian, Mississippi. Hear her thoughts below…

It never really hit me until recently of how much of an impact Obama has on the African American community and how much it means for them to have someone they feel has really broken through the barriers of racism in our country. If I were in their shoes, I would simply feel . . . relief. I am so happy for them.
who cares
I think it’s unfortunate that a high percentage of black Americans refused to participate in our election process until a black man ran for president. Voting for a man based solely upon race is every bit as wrong as voting against him based on race. You can’t right wrongs with more wrongs.
So sad, the INMATES, will have CONTROL of the ASYLUM Tuesday.
I cure, Mike. The only choice African-Americans have had as a selection for President of the USA are White Males. We have proven over our lifetimes we’ll vote for a white individual. So insinuating that we voted for him because he’s black and not what he stands for is insulting. If you would open your little narrow color blind mind, you would realize he was far superior to the opposition candidate. You ought to be embarassed voting for a candidate with the credential of Sara Palin. When are you going set race aside and vote for someone other than a white person. - Mr. Hojangles. Naw the inmates have been running and destroying the asylum for the last 8 years. kc1ndy.
You 3 need to stop listening to so much right wingnut hate media and enjoy the inclusive ride that President Obama will provide.
Yes, change is coming & IT has 666 upon IT!!!
There were a lot of African Americans that voted for Obama because of his race, and there were African Americans who did not vote for him. I’ll tell you now I did not vote so you can’t say I’m a right wing brain washed person, etc. The majority of the people voted for him without even knowing what the issues were for either candidate, just simply because he ran as a minority. To say race did not play a role in this election is wrong. What if Obama decided to run as bi-racial or white seeing his mother was Caucasian and father was African American? The results may have been very different. This is a major turning point in our country’s history, but this all revolved around him being the first black president. For those calling for the end of racism, why is Obama’s race the focal point of this whole election? I congratulate Obama for becoming the new President of the United States of America, the same as I would for any other elect no matter what color of their skin is. It’s time to stop using “labels” as African American, Japanese American, etc if we want to move beyond race. After all, we are all Americans and should be thankful for that.
Oh gosh, let’s post with some drab internet-isms like “The inmates will take over the asylum!” I hear the “death knell” ringing! Seriously people, find some new cliches to use or just shut up.
cliche, WALANG HAYA KA!!! Is that better for you?
After reading comments posted here and comments from a previous news story (regarding the deseg program), it’s painfully obvious that we have a very long way to go for racial acceptance. Congratulations to Barack Obama. God Bless.
