JEFFERSON CITY — Have an idea on how to spend part of Missouri’s $4 billion share of the federal stimulus money?

Gov. Jay Nixon — or his staff, anyway — wants to hear from you. The governor today launched a new Web site where citizens can submit suggestions for stimulus projects.

Of course, as these things go, Nixon’s mug and a variety of Nixon news releases appear prominently. It’s not clear who receives the suggestions, because the Web site doesn’t list any actual e-mails. Users fill out a Web-based form with their suggestions or ideas.

According to a news release, Nixon has appointed policy director Jeff Harris, budget director Linda Luebbering, and senior counsel Paul Wilson, to oversee what he’s calling his “Transform Missouri Initiative.”

Says the news release:

On the Transform.mo.gov Web site, individuals and groups from across Missouri can submit proposals for projects that could benefit from federal recovery dollars. All these proposals will be collected and reviewed by the staff of the Transform Missouri Initiative, and the ideas will be forwarded to relevant federal, state and local agencies, departments and officials. As the federal government establishes an official application process for various funds and projects, Transform Missouri Initiative personnel will assist in providing information about the procedure to those who submit eligible proposals.

Bike Paths. If I could ride my bike to work, without the fear of dieing,I would. The Great Rivers Greenway Project already has plans/is building/has built over 600 miles of trails. Give them money to speed the process.

According to latest census that I’ve seen, there are 5,595,211 people in the state of Missouri. Of course not all are taxpayers yet, many are children. My suggestion, pay every unmarried Missouri tax paying citizen $1,000,000, pay every Missouri tax paying married couple $2,000,000. This would boost consumer spending, borrowing, and confidence, and resolve most of the foreclosure and housing crisis. It would also mean there was still well over 3.9 billion left over in the stimulus package that can be spent on state projects, infrastucture, education, health care, the homeless, etc…

I agree with ksiefert48. Otherwise, the state will have to conform to what the fed requires.

Tax refund. It’s our money that Obama gave away without our consent. Anyone who paid taxes gets a refund. Now what is really going to happen is companies owned by politicians or friends and family of politicians are going to get fat contracts to do crappy work. If you have to spend it, please make one SMOOTH road in Missouri. Dont just pave over the existing humps and bumps, do it right for a change.

keith, 5,595,211 multiplied by $1,000,000 equals $5,595,211,000,000 or other words $5.6 trillion dollars. As far as giving the money back Missouri is on the short side. For every dollar of federal taxes paid by the people of the state of MO they get back $1.23.

John, it’s not your money or my money. It’s money that doesn’t exist yet and that the government doesn’t have. If anything, it’s our great-grandkids’ money.

Good point Chad. Then give it to me and I will save it for my grandchildren. Wait…how will that help the economy? I am starting to think this stimulous idea is flawed. Nah…the Democrats thought of it, it has to be right. HA!!!
