ST. LOUIS — Though she’s miles behind incumbent incumbent Francis Slay in the cash rash, challenger Irene Smith has made some fundraising progress thanks to her friends in the public schools.

According to her latest report, Smith received $2,500 from the St. Louis teacher’s union, her largest donation to date. Smith also received several smaller donations from public school boosters, such as city School Board member Peter Downs and former state representative candidate Chad Beffa.

Local 420 is opposing Slay because of his stance on education. The mayor has all but abandoned his hopes of reforming the struggling school district, instead embracing charter schools. (At the same, school choice advocates have donated heavily to his campaign.)

As mentioned earlier, perhaps Smith’s best chance of pulling off an upset in next week’s Democratic primary is to hope teachers pack the polls at an otherwise low-turnout election.

Remember the Peter Downs/Donna Jones election? What did the Slay-slate have, $100,000? And what did DJ/PD have? 2,500? Who won that? Slay, you have pissed off too many people with your corrupt ways. From the North to the South, people are angry at what you have done to screw our city at the expense of your friends. Your days are numbered.

Jake-

In the past you and your paper have been accused of being in the pocket of Mayor Slay. It seems that with this coverage, you dispel those myths.

Although, you do refer to the Mayor as the “incumbent incumbent Francis Slay”. Does he get an additional “incumbent” for each term he serves? Spell check doesn’t catch those pesky grammatical errors.

Oh, now does this mean that Irene is bought by the teacher’s union? Couldn’t that $2500 went to purchase some books or something. It’s amazing that when opposition takes money they’re bought, when its someone that the status quo bottom feeders give money to it’s supporting the cause. Hypocritical!

North St. luny:

you’re right, Local 420 could have spent the money on educating children. I hadn’t thought about that. Local 420 must be against the children.

“Reforming the troubled school district”? Don’t you mean trying to rip it to shreds???? And Catholic schools are closing too. All for those wonderful charters! Not. GET RID OF SLAY MARCH 3!
