JEFFERSON CITY — Former state treasurer and gubernatorial candidate Sarah Steelman is still deciding whether to run for Senate and face U.S. Rep. Roy Blunt in what would surely be a divisive Republican primary.

Both Blunt and Steelman made it clear on the day Sen. Kit Bond said he wouldn’t seek reelection in 2010 that they would seriously consider a race. Sources close to Blunt said today that the two big-name GOP candidates have had several conversations. Blunt has been methodically clearing the field.

Former U.S. Sen. Jim Talent was the first to publicly bow out. Lesser candidate Jack Jackson, a former state rep, announced his intentions tonight to run for state Senate.

Some Republican sources privately believe Steelman would be a better candidate to face Democrat Robin Carnahan, but they don’t believe she could beat Blunt in a primary. Blunt would own the 7th district in Southwest Missouri, where Steelman was strong against Hulshof.

And Steelman? In a statement obtained by the Political Fix, she remains undecided:

“I am continuing to explore a run for U.S. Senate because hard working men and women who love this country are looking for a better way. Missourians know we have to hold people accountable for their bad decisions; the bail outs, the earmarks, the self-dealing and the cozy relationships between congressmen and lobbyists. These actions have undermined the trust in our institutions, devastated the American economy, and have shown disrespect for the hard-working people of this state and country.
Too many Americans are paying for Washington’s failures in the form of lost jobs and shrinking income, but they still stand ready to roll up their sleeves and get to work to create a better future.

Missouri’s next U.S. Senator must stand with them to credibly address our economic problems and demonstrate to Missourians that she has the courage to stand up to Washington’s power brokers.”

The classic 2 fer. Ole meansprited and backward Bush water carrier, Bond is retiring, cause he knows he can’t win. Equally nasty Blunt doesn’t get it and will certainly lose in a landslide for supporting the incredibly disastorious, everything Bush policies. Winner, the Democratic filibuster proof U S Senate. Thank you Big MO.

I hope she runs. She could easily stomp Princess Robin. End political royalty in America in both parties, NOW

EITHER STEELMAN OR BLUNT, WHAT DOES IT MATTER? A MATCHED PAIR OF LAST CENTURY POLITICAL HACKS. BLUNT IS SO TIED TO WASHINGTON AND THE FAILED
BUSH YEARS THAT HE WILL FALL FLAT IN MOST OF MO, EXCEPT HIS SW CORNER. STEELMAN HAS TOO MANY TIES TO POLITICANS WHO HAVE NEVER WON ANY IMPORTANT RACE. ROBIN WILL TROUNCE BOTH OR EITHER OF THEM. JH

Go Roy! The Dems need a filibuster-proof majority in the Senate.

If Steelman truly represents the idea that we need LESS of Washington, not more, then she will be on the winning side of history. The current Obama administration is building an extremely strong case by its own actions that Washington isn’t the solution, its the heart of our country’s problems.
