Sen. Scott Rupp still taking hard line on Martinez nomination
JEFFERSON CITY — The filibuster over Gov. Jay Nixon’s nominee for director of Missouri economic development is continuing and the issue is getting more heated.
Sen. Scott Rupp said on the floor of the Senate this morning that he is continuing to oppose the nomination of Linda Martinez even after meeting with her this morning. Rupp said he wants a letter from Martinez and the governor saying that she will uphold illegal immigration laws.
“Just reassure me that we’re going to fight to protect American jobs,” Rupp said.
He said the meeting with Martinez went well, but he also said a meeting with Nixon chief of staff didn’t go well.
“He got pretty heated in my office,” Rupp said of John Watson. “I was told by the governor’s chief of staff ‘we’re not going to sign anything.’”
Minority Leader Victor Callahan, a Democrat, is now chiding Rupp for the same thing Rupp criticized Martinez for. Rupp yesterday complained that Martinez hadn’t personally come to see him. Callahan is now saying Rupp should have personally told Sen. Robin Wright-Jones, who is sponsoring Martinez, of his concerns.
“Get on with it,” Callahan said.
It’s sounding like Martinez’ nomination might not happen until at least next week.

Prima donna.
> Prima donna.
It’s so unreasonable that he demand that our tax money not be used to hire illegal immigrants. Yep, he’s a real prima donna.
Missouri Political News Service: Linda Martinez: “Tell Them Whatever They Want to Hear”

Since when is the economic develoment director responsible for law enforcement?
If she came out of St. Louis, make sure she is not mixed up with that Moveon.org or Acorn bunch.
If she won’t pledge to uphold illegal immigration laws, she deserves to be voted down. This is a nation of laws, not a tyranny where those in power choose which laws to enforce and against whom they will be enforced.
I think it’s great that Sen. Rupp is taking his job seriously to represent all his constituents who have contacted him opposing Martinez’s appointment.
Confirmation by the Senate is part of our system of “checks and balances.” Filibustering a confirmation is part of “check” on appointments. There is nothing outrageous about listening to your constituents who don’t like the idea of appointing someone who doesn’t support our immigration laws.
Martinez should not be appointed. The jobless rate in the U.S. surely indicates we need someone at the head of Missouri’s Department of Economic Development who understands that Missouri’s citizens need first crack at jobs in Missouri.
Thank you Senator Rupp for taking seriously the oath that you take to enforce our laws - among those that say workers should be in our country legally.
Scott Rupp: KEEP UP THE GREAT WORK!
If the liberals are hounding you you are doing the right thing!
Don’t stop!
Great job Scott! I used to live in Missouri and I wish Illinois had some Senators and politicians like you. Give the liberals who do not want accountability hell.
