UPDATE: Rupp to Gov. Jay Nixon: “I am not afraid of your threats”
JEFFERSON CITY — Sen. Scott Rupp, R-Wentzville is giving a dramatic and pointed speech during the discussion of the appointment of Linda Martinez as director of economic development.
“Do you have your goon squad on speed dial, governor?” Rupp said. “You may think you can intimidate me governor, but you are wrong.”
Rupp has been standing in the way of Martinez’ nomination because of her position on illegal immigration. Martinez fought Valley Park’s proposed tough ordinance against illegal immigrants.
Rupp just sat down. But not after spending about 15 minutes blasting not Martinez, but Gov. Jay Nixon. According to Rupp, Nixon threatened him after Rupp sought more information from Martinez. Rupp said Nixon’s staff called St. Charles County officials and asked them to force Rupp to stop his filibuster.
“Within 15 minutes I got a call from my county,” Rupp said. “I was simply seeking clarification. You would have thought I was asking for the keys to the kingdom.”
Rupp then went to compare Nixon to former Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich, who is accused of trying to sell the U.S. Senate seat in Illinois for his own personal gain.
“Your actions are the same as the former governor of Illinois,” Rupp said. “The Illinois Senate was not afraid of Blagojevich, and I’m telling you the Missouri Senate is not afraid of you.”
UPDATE: After about an hour of debate, senators approved Martinez on a voice vote, so Rupp’s “NO” vote won’t even show up in the record.

Go Rupp. This lady is evil.
show time…
anybody still wondering why the gop is losing elections?
rupp’s a loser
Senator Rupp is making a Rump of himself. Talk about exaggeration and hubris. How is Nixon’s actions like Blagojevich’s? I think Senator Rump trying to hold Martinez hostage over a phony immigration issue is more like Governor Rod’s attempt to hold a U. S. Senate seat hostage.
llbean - keep thinking that - that\’s why you will lose in 2012 and on. Republicans were shackled by Democrat-lite Bush for 8 years. Their message was not delivered or even implemented. Conservatives have not had a say in years… it\’s been run by moderates were are closer to Democrats than Republicans in many ways (see: Bush).
But please keep underestimating the opposition… I welcome it.
Scott Rupp, Senatorial Drama Queen.
llbean is correct, in a way. People of Missouri don’t want to see this partisan screeching on the Economic Development nominee. Not when so many Missourians are out of work. The GOP does this and it makes them appear insensitive to the plight of these folks.
suzyjax I disagree I think it shows the GOP wants to keep legal Missourians working not illegal immigrants.
Why is it that Illegal Aliens are treated like royalty in the USA? Liberals seem to think that it’s acceptable to let people walk across our borders and take advantage of the US Taxpayers by: obtaining free health care, avoiding payroll taxes, collecting Social Security, accepting food stamps, being granted drivers licenses without having insurance, and much more all at the expense of the hard working, law abiding, American tax payer.
When are people going to start speaking the truth, and not what’s politically correct? Our society paying a huge price for allowing these handouts to illegal aliens take place. Illegals cost taxpayers hundreds of billions of dollars per year, yet our politicians (democrat) defend them because Illegals are viewed as “potential voters” for future elections. Politicians don’t care because they will NEVER have to rely on social security, they don’t have to purchase health benefits or save for retirement because they get all of these items for free from taxpayers.
It’s called “Taxation without Representation”…does this sound familiar? This kind of narcissism took place in history a while back and drastic measures had to be taken to free ourselves from the grip of the tyrannical government.
Liberals are not the same business owners or other employers that lure illegal immigrants here with sub-minimum wage jobs. The Republicans in the party of Lincoln fought against slavery. The Republicans today want to give the employers tax breaks all the while knowing that they hire illegal immigrants.
How is it that a lawyer from Bryan Cave is in favor of not punishing illegal immigration? I will be sure to double check Ms. Martinez on the facts. If the representation of a position against the laws that were proposed in Valley Park is the only bullet in the chamber, then this pistol might misfire.
If Rupp had said from the beginning that he was trying to get more information on the appointee that would be one thing. Although I disagree with his politics I could at least respect that. In the first article he admitted to holding up the process basically because she didn’t come running to him to kiss his backside and beg for his support. He and this type of politics is exactly what is wrong with politics. If she meets the standards, support her. If not, don’t. But don’t waste our tax money playing politics by expecting every appointee to come calling to ask for your blessing. No class and no leader–vote him out asap!
Gaucho–Ummm, who’s being taxed without representation? I’m a registered voter, and some of my taxes come from my representation, and others come despite it, but I can’t say I’m not represented at all. While one may be able to argue illegals are being represented (which, technically, they aren’t), they aren’t–by your own argument–being taxed. So, really, I miss how this parallels the Stamp Act, et. al.
BTW–great album!
