St. Louis doesn’t have the market cornered on Obama streets
Last weekend, St. Louis offered its tribute to the new president, unveiling the sign showcasing Delmar Boulevard’s new honorary dual designation as “Barack Obama Boulevard.”
Although the salute came just weeks into the new president’s term — too soon, for some — it turns out St. Louis was not the first town to honor Barack Obama with a street sign.
In South Florida, the tiny community of Opa-locka pounced on the idea, dedicating their “Obama Avenue” a week earlier — on President’s Day, no less.
While the designation was met with some reservations in St. Louis — a few aldermen were concerned about honoring an official history is yet to fully judge — there was apparently no similiar concern in Opa-locka.
Officials there may not be done with their honoring the first African-American president — according to the Miami Herald, the ciy commission is considering naming their municipal airfield the Opa-locka-Barack Obama Executive Airport.
